Hey guys

A mate of mine is travelling from East Midlands Parkway to Manchester on the 9th May. As he'd have to change at Sheffield anyway I've told him to split at Sheffield doing EMD - SHF £15.90 then AP TPE to MAN (no railcard).

Is this the best way of doing this?

Cheers

I get return tickets between Derby and Sheffield for £8.50 so I had to double-check this one as I couldn't believe it's that expensive! Turns out it's true, the cheapest EMD-SHF is an off-peak single (there isn't a day single) at £15.90. But if you split this at Long Eaton (the next stop, about a minute away) you can do it for £10 with an EMD-LGE anytime day single (£1.60) and a LGE-SHF off-peak day single (£8.40). All EMD-SHF trains call at Long Eaton as far as I can tell.

You can do better still if you're prepared to get the stopper from Sheffield to Manchester - then you can use an £8.60 Derbyshire Wayfarer from Long Eaton to Sheffield to New Mills, and just have to buy New Mills to Manchester extra.

Nottingham - Manchester is valid via East Midlands Parkway (Routeing Guide map PS) and the walk-on fares for Sunday 9 May are:
Single (CDS) £18.30
Day Return (CDR) £18.40
Off-Peak Return (SVR) £35.25 (not valid to return M-F before 0900.)

Break of journey is permitted for all these tickets, so your friend can start or finish at East Midlands Parkway. Travel should be via Derby, not via Nottingham.

Or there's some TPE advance singles available from Nottingham to Manchester, e.g. £7 on the 11:31, so that plus a single EMD-NOT (£3.10) may be the cheapest option.

11:07 appears to be the first EMD-NOT train that day though, it arrives 11:22 so might be cutting it fine to catch the 11:31.

I wouldn't think it would be cutting it fine really

It is a valid connection. I can get this itinerary from any trainline-based site:

Code:
Station Arr Dep Travel by Service Provider
EAST MIDLANDS PARKWAY 11:07 Train EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS
NOTTINGHAM 11:22 11:31 Train EAST MIDLANDS TRAINS
MANCHESTER PICCADILLY 13:37

My advice would be to bring that itinerary with you, generate it yourself and print it from the National Rail and EMT websites.
