I stopped using Chesterfield station years ago because of the high parking charges. Perhaps £15 isn’t too high for a station car park at large city station but not at a town like Chesterfield. It‘s the same price at Newark Northgate. I suppose that’s what happens when a station is situated on a busy inter city route. If I’m going out for the day to somewhere to the north, as I have a drive of around 30 minutes to either Chesterfield or Newark I just stay in my car and drive the whole way. Sometimes, if the train fare isn’t considerably higher than from Chesterfield I do pay the £5 parking charge at Alfreton station.
The difference with East Midlands Parkway is that although it’s less at £8, it is a parkway station with a huge car park and loads of space, right out in the country and not in a town or city. When it first opened the then East Midlands Trains sold quite reasonably priced day returns to Nottingham, Derby and Leicester which included parking.
If the Skylink Express bus from Nottingham to East Midlands Airport was to call in at the station, would add any more than 5 minutes to come off the A453 dual carriageway to do that?
East midlands parkway can only be accessed by car, and once there, there is nothing else there apart from the railway station, unless you wanted to walk to Redhill marina and visit the coffee shop - but if you wanted to do that then go a little further down the lane and you can park at the marina.
I would consider the pakrway station to be among my main local(ish) railway stations, but I have absolutely no reason to use it as it is at the moment , now if they were to extend the number 9 midalnd classic route ( now Diamond bus) service a little further to there, it could open up some public transport options. but for as it is its just a bit of a lost cause.
For those who dont kow the Number 9 bus currently goes from:
Burton upon Trent
Winshill ( just outside Burton)
Newhall ( near swadlincote)
Swadlincote
Woodville ( near swadlincote)
Ashby de-la-zouch ( other bus services to Coalville, Loughborough, Leicester)
Melbourne ( bus services to Derby)
East Midlands Airport
East Midlands Gateway (EMG) less than 5 minutes from there is East midlands parkway
