East Lancs Rawtenstall Query

Good evening,

I may be visiting the East Lancs Railway on a mainline special charter train later this year. The turn around time at Rawtenstall does not seem to be very long, around 40 mins perhaps.

It is a long time since I last visited that line, is there still a supermarket almost right opposite the Station at Rawtenstall? I think it may have been an Asda or Tesco, however on looking on the internet, both of these stores seem to be further from the station than I recall. Perhaps the store I am thinking of which was not that large, has closed and a bigger one opened up some distance away? Otherwise, is there a place near the station that I can get a sandwich/food etc from to take back on the train for the return journey?

There's a Tesco's right opposite the station, so you shouldn't have any problems. Also, if its open and you fancy ice cream, pop into Granelli's - great selection and it's right nearby. Perfect way to kick off the trip back?

Yeah that Tesco is just across the river bridge at the end of Rawtenstall station, however if you seat is fairly secured i'd alight at Ramsbottom, Mobile Burger van, Tesco & Morrisons are no more than a 400 yards away, theres also a mystery chippy very close but i cant find it lol

Given the sometimes erratic timekeeping of charter services, the "safe" option would be to take the food with you, rather than hope you have time to buy it at Rawtenstall.

Thank you for the above information/advice. It must have been that Tesco that I was thinking of. I am looking forward to this trip although it's not for a few months, the routing to get there goes on some very interesting lines in the greater Manchester area.

One place in Rawtenstall that is not very far from the heritage railway station is Mr.Fitzpatrick' Herbalist Bar that has been producing botanically produced traditional cordials since 1899 and is now the only one left in existence.

Michael Portillo has visited this establishment during one of his very many rail journeys. You can still be served there, in its "time-capsule" atmosphere. A most unusual place to visit, nonetheless.

It certainly is,many years ago my family were asked to do a grand day out on the East Lancs Railway with local weather presenter Dianne Oxeberry for bbc North West Tonight, took about ten takes to get the kids to go yumm to natural sasparilla, they were about 7 and 5 at the time.

However I think it is a temperance bar as opposed to a herbalist bar.

You may well be correct in this, but it was noticeable that during our last visit, a group of five girls aged about 9-10 were nearby and one of them said "Are we going to the Herbalists" ?....it must have entered into the local patois.
