Can anyone advise if East Croydon is a compulsory ticket area? FCC and Southern leaflets make no distinction and staff at Brighton station do not understand what I'm asking them.

I don't know if it is in the literal sense of the words, but there is a barrier across the whole width of the booking area onto the overbridge and it always seemed to be staffed when I've been through in late evenings. I don't recall the gates ever being locked open there.

I've seen them locked open once, which was at about 10pm in the evening.

What's the reason for you knowing? They've let me through before 09:30am many times when I had an Off-Peak ticket, because it's a bit difficult to dash to the platform for the 09:30 train to Victoria when the barriers won't let you through until 09:30! (You're not allowed to run down the tunnels leading to the platform anyway.)

They are at 0615 on a Sunday morning!

As with any gateline, if you're struggling, find a invalid ticket, flash the orange at the staff and get let through!

Seriously though, you will need a ticket to leave, NR interchange you should be OK, but for the tram you need to get past the gates.

Thanks for the responses but we were actually trying to determine if it was a compulsory ticket area or not. We played it safe in the end and just got off the train, getting on a later one whilst Oyster cards were touched in
