East Croydon to Gatwick

Next week on the 28th I'll be leaving East Croydon for Gatwick at around 3:30 am , I have a Network Gold card.

When I last travelled the fare was £3.35 now it's £5.10 when was there such a big jump. I've also looked at fares later in the day and the £3.35 fare becomes available which also says it's any time single.

Can someone explain to me the differences between both anytime singles.

Would a discounted ticket from the day before still be valid until 04:29 the following day?

EDIT: I've checked a couple of other sites - redspottedhanky and east coast don't show the £4.50 ticket, but thetrainline.com does. What's broken?

I think you have to start the journey before the 0200 deadline.

Note if buying a ticket dated the day before, you will have to buy it before midnight

I think it used to be that journeys had to commence before 0230, but now they must finish before 0429?

You're right! It's under "Show me", click the "Thameslink only" check box and magically the £4.50 fare appears.

That must be recent change though, as I've bought many "Thameslink only" fares in the past and never had to find that option before.

It's also utterly unfair for customers who don't have a Ph.D. in ticket gymnastics.

There is a 0230 rule for Day Travelcards:

Off-Peak Day Travelcards are valid for travel from whenever Off-Peak fares become available from your station – check our Journey Planner to see whether an Off-Peak fare is available when you wish to travel. Valid up to the early hours of the following day provided the train you are using beyond the London Fare Zones area departs no later than 02:30. If you are already on a train by 02:30 you may continue your journey provided no further change of trains is made.

That said, 0230 rule doesn't appear to have been implemented in NRE. I tried a St Albans to St Pancras itinerary departing this evening and returning on the 0321 on Saturday morning and NRE shows the Day Travelcard is valid.

There is no 0200 deadline, nor an 0239 rule. That page clearly contains an error, but the way it's worded it would not apply to the OP's ticket combination anyway!

http://www.brfares.com/#faredetail?orig=SAC&dest=0035&tkt=ODT has nothing about such a deadline, so NRE will indeed show it's valid.

The ticket needs to be bought before midnight to avoid being penalised.

I have noticed this change. There have been people complaining on Twitter to the new GTR accounts that the old cheaper fares are gone, but they respond implacably (and presumably truthfully!) that no fares have changed (yet). So I looked into one case and hey presto, it appeared if you check that box!

What irony that this is the opposite of what happens on Southern's TVMs. If you try to buy an off peak ticket at 9am, you're offered "Thameslink only" but the "Southern only" option isn't available. However, it's nothing less than the illogical behaviour I've come to expect from them.

That is only relevant to Travelcards, the OP is talking about a point to point single ticket from East Croydon to Gatwick Airport.
