I just realised I've been such an idiot
I usually buy a ticket to go from East Crodyon - Waterloo - Guildford at £9.10. But with an Oyster I can get the cost down to £8.35. I wish I had been more alert to the fact!

Wouldn't it be cheaper and quicker to go West Croydon - Epsom - Guildford?

Now that does surprise me; I would have expected the times to be at least similar - I guess I need to check the timetable book.

TOTAL: 1h17

12:22 Clapham Junction - Guildford 12:50
TOTAL: 0h50

Ah, but the OP is going via Waterloo ( presumably Thameslink to London Bridge then up to Waterloo east and across? ), not via Clapham Jct...
