Hi I'm thinking about applying for a job with East coast.. However I was a bit silly a few years ago and got myself a caution from the police. Do East coast do criminal record checks and if so is a caution likely to stop me from working with them? I don't have any convictions

Was it a Simple Caution or Conditional Caution?

Apply, declare it if specifically asked for on the form and be honest if asked about it. The worse that can happen is you don't get the job. No harm in trying though.

It will depend on how relevant the incident is to the job you are applying for (if it involves cash for a role involving working with cash, drink driving if going for a safety critical role etc).

Although in my experience of the 2 tocs I have worked as a driver for and the toc I worked for in hr the CRB checks are rarely done. That may just be coincidence but all 3 companies have said they would do one but none ever have on me.

Obviously be honest though.

Okay thank you? Does anybody know if East coast will request a disclosure? I don't want to go though the recruitment process for this to be an issue at the end, I'd be gutted.

Read what I posted above. There are new regulations. They are only allowed to request a disclosure for certain positions now. The full list is available via that link.

Well it's probably worth risking being 'gutted'.

To be blunt, if you come on here to ask a question like this you will get some advice based on experience but certainly not an answer. The only way you will know for sure is by applying.

As I say, just be honest. If its not a problem you may get the job. If it is a problem then the worst that will happen is that you don't get the job and are in no worse position.

If I were you I would spend less time worrying about it and asking for advice on here and more time filling out the application.

Once again, sorry to be blunt but you don't stand a chance by not applying.

It is INCREDIBLY rare for a prospective employer to ask you to declare a caution. 99% of the time they will ask for you to disclose all UNSPENT convictions.

A caution is an admission of guilt and provides an alternative form of prosecution...essentially a slap on the wrist from the Police or even Magistrates for that matter. This will however stay on your record but is not deemed a conviction.

If East Coast ask you to disclose all conviction AND cautions, then yes, you should mention it as failure to do so would result in a charge of gross misconduct and a summary dismissal.

I think you'll be fine.
