Just a heads up to say that Crosscountry currently have an East Coast HST Power car on hire, which is working on the rear of the 13:23 Plymouth to Edinburgh (left New Street about 20 minutes down). Might be 43310 or 43319, I'm not sure, can anyone confirm it for me? Is this a recent development as of this morning?

Also, on a completely unrelated point, the ATW service which leaves Birmingham International at about 17:10(?) has been formed of a 150+158 formation for the last two days, vice the more familiar pair of 158s on the majority of services. Is this a regular thing?

It was 43310. Appears to have gone hire today but there was an EC power car on hire about a week ago for a few days.

Ok, so Cross Country have 5 HST sets, but don't use them all the time thus usually have at least 1 set in warm store.

So why bother hiring in a spare EC power car? Is it cheaper than using their "own"?

Well, I'm sure they wouldn't do it for fun especially if it was more expensive.

It does seem a very strange thing to do though when their own power cars aren't all being used.. possibly due to where they're stored? Maybe it was more convenient to hire the EC power car based on distance?

XC use 4 HSTs daily, so they don't have any stored any more

They have five HSTs though, so there should be one set on maintenance each day, you would think it would be easier for XC to swap out a working power car from their spare set instead of hiring one from East Coast, especially given that the depot for XCs' HSTs is Craigentinny.

Of course it's entirely possible that the spare set is currently elsewhere for whatever reason, or maybe XC do have three knackered power cars at the moment.

Also, thanks for the info guys :)
