East Coast have a poster up at York station claiming that passengers are required to "hold a valid ticket and surrender this on request" when "entering or leaving the platform area" and saying that platform tickets are available.

They seem to be suggesting that York is a compulsory ticket area (CTA) however this is not the case.

Does anyone know what they are going on about?

Anyone know when these checks take place, so we can arrange a trip on Grand Central or something and tell them to stop harassing us?

How do you claim the delay repay when you ticket is gone?

East Coasts ticket checking is annoying on the platform. I have known a platform announced 5 minutes before departure. The ticket check takes place and the train leaves late as a result. It is a bad job if all tickets can be checked on the train in the 45 minutes it takes to get to Peterborough.

They seem to put blokades on for a Friday night and funnel eveyone through a check point by the main stairs t ocheck tickets. It REALLY annoys me! They seem to have hired in the same sort of goons that get used for fottball stewards as "event management" staff.

How do you conduct ticket checks in an open station, if there are trains that permit buying a ticket on the train?

I think they must have to let people through who want to buy a GFC ticket. I am not sure so i will try and opbserve the blockade in action. think they also stop people going over the footbridge toward the NRM/Dog Si*t alley.

I wonder if this poster might be related to a decision last month?

In response to concerns raised by staff and passengers about regular ticketless travel & disturbance by drunk passengers on late night services leaving York, the BTP and some TOCs have planned some additional checks and travel with on-board staff to deal with any 'incidents'. I would expect that these posters provide help to any officer during one of those exercises to prevent attempts at ticketless travel combined with drunkeness.

They may be un-related, but I can see the benefit of the Posters if I am correct.

Yes Dave - i think you might be right - Booze has been banned on the last trains North from York, BTP have been there in numbers and the TOCs have put on more staff. They have been doing that on and off for a few weeks
