I've been travelling during the day on East Coast recently rather than on just early and late trains and noticed the following that seemed strange:

  • A class 90 (dark blue with hand painted numbers) on a York - Kings Cross train
  • A Virgin 125 with East Midlands power cars
  • Many trains short formed with a carriage missing

Anyone know why this is the case?

They have a DBS class 90 on hire to cover for class 91 work - so that will explain the first one. The EMT power cars are almost certainly going to be from the set they hire daily from EMT. The coaches are reliveried (but from time to time you get a full EMT liveried set covering the working)
Lots of short formed sets - again faults.

Virgin Trains East Coast are currently hiring a class 90 from DB Cargo for use as required on Newark/York trains to cover for unavailable class 91s. The dark blue loco will presumably have been 90034, which was leased by DRS for a short period from DB Schenker to work with Virgin's Pretendolino rake.

Two unspecified HST power cars are sub-leased from East Midlands Trains on a daily basis to work a fixed diagram with an additional mark 3 rake also sub-leased from East Midlands Trains, which has been revinyled externally in VTEC livery, while VTEC's own trains are refreshed.

hardly odd sightings - they happen almost everyday.

The carriages missing i assume is due to some problem. Perhaps the disabled toilet issue ;)
