Can someone clarify which way East Coast trains will be going during the North East diversions on Jan 8 and 9. To be specific the 11:30 to Inverness that runs non-stop from York to Newcastle but gets much less time than the diverted ones that stop at Darlington.

Looks as if they are just passing through on the avoider, the other routes (such as Stillington Branch or via Sunderland) would mean a journey time of over 1 hour.

I've just checked the East Coast website for those two days and it says that the trains not stopping at Darlo will have their journey times extended by upto 30 minutes. Could be a case that they are going via the Stillington Branch but have yet to put the actual times on?

On Saturday's 8th & 15th January 2011, also Sunday's 9th & 16th January 2011, East Coast Services wil be diverted between Darlington and Durham via Stillington.

ALL DAY Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th January and also from around 1300 or 1400 hours on Saturday 30th January, and upto around mid day on Sunday 31st January ALL East Coast services will be Diverted between York and Newcastle via Sunderland.

So if that's the case would I be correct in assuming that the faster journey time is because it will go via Yarm and not Darlington?

Problem is, going via Yarm and the Stillington line normally adds time on, usually a good 20 minutes or so. Line speeds on the Stillington line are quite slow.

Out of interest, where did this info come from? Can't see it anywhere on the net yet.

Just looked up the trains on the East Cpast booking engine. I understand Yarm is slower than Darlo direct but getting to Stillington from York via Yarm is quicker than getting to Stillington from York via Darlo and so I assume thats why the non-stop train from York to Newc is faster than those via Darlo and Stillington. Also I see with the Hartlepool diversions on Janb 29 the 1040 from London to Edinburgh runs non stop from York to Berwick...is it possible to avoid Newcastle if diverted via Hartlepool?

That's right as the train would have to reverse at Darlington to go via Allens West. However York - Darlington - Durham - Newcastle is normally 1 hour, and York - Northallerton - Yarm - Stillington - Durham - Newcastle is longer than that, unless I'm not reading the timetable correctly.

The only way I could see this happening is if it came across the King Edward Bridge and used the avoider, either that or go via Carlisle! Can't see them not stopping at Newcastle, sounds like the plans haven't been finalised yet?
