As East Coast seems to be embarking on a series of names to their fleet I would like to take the opportunity to suggest a strategy. I have come up with a name for each of their HST power cars and class 91 locos. I would like to suggest a return to previous times when all of the express locos seemed to have a name.

This has come to me recently when I have done a lot of travelling on FGW. They seem to name their HST power cars to reflect the service they offer, with a nod to the history of their routes and services. I also think that Virgin have a nice system of names for the cities they serve, not sure about some of the Virgin, say, Lion heart

I have thought about a strategy for naming. Clearly the names need to reflect both the heritage of the east coast route along with recognising the vast changes and regeneration that have taken place in cities like Leeds and Newcastle in recent years. There should also be a reflection of the people and places served by EC services.

I therefore suggest 5 categories from which names may be selected:

1) Heritage
2) Culture
3) Places
4) People
5) Reward ( sponsorship, company links, cross business promotion)

Namings will also present an opportunity for promotion and collaborative working but should reflect the categories set out above. (Hence the inclusion of Reward) these are my thought and I would like any suggestions you may have for additions or deletions. Clearly namings can not be divisive or controversial but I have tried to reflect the whole EC route from Kings Cross to Aberdeen/Inverness (hence the inclusion of the HST! – to give me some more space and not miss anyone out) I have also tried to leave out names that are purely for my benefit like Darlington FC – FA Trophy Winners 2011!

I think the promotional opportunities alone should help to pay back any costs incurred in creating the plates and affixing them to the locomotive. They will also help to engender in the travelling public a feeling of “togetherness” and connection with the company. It may also be used to help create links between local communities/groups and the company, ultimately helping to reduce trespass or rail crime.

I have returned to many of the GNER names as they seemed to reflect the area served by the company. However there are lots of new names for the majority of the HST fleet. I have left those named locomotives with their current names as it seems pointless to change them. I have, however, taken the option to remove Glasgowcentric names form the list. With EC running a very limited service to that great city it seems an unfair blow to then name a loco after the city. I have also tried to name electric locos after areas where they can actually run. Again it seems a little unfair to call one, say, Aberdeen! There are also some anomalies, for instance Durham, under the GNER names, gets three names, City of Durham, County Durham and Durham Cathedral. I, understand the subtle difference between these, but to some they are the same place! I have left them in to reflect the wider area of the North East and the world heritage status of Durham Cathedral. The same could be said for Newcastle and Tyne and Wear. Leeds and its environs also seemed to fair badly from the old naming policy and I have tried to change that. I have also tried to avoid names that already exist, such as Collingwood or Sir Nigel Gresley.

I have also tried to spread the names out to as many stations served by East Coast as possible. Unfortunately I cant find anything interesting about Retford!

I appreciate this is fantasy land and that EC are not going to start a vast naming policy. However I do think that a named locomotive, even today, can create feelings of happiness and identity in the travelling public. I also think a return to named elite trains would increase brand awareness and customer loyalty while also offering EC the opportunity to maximise revenue by charging a premium for titled services.

I thoroughly approve of naming locomotives, it's an excellent way to produce a sense of identity and loyalty, especially if they last for the entire service life. I tend to believe that there should be a theme to them, ideally with plenty of tradition behind the names. So for the 91s, I would go with a theme that started with 91001 when she first entered service, reflecting LNER tradition. All names would be applied on a plate with cast sans-serif lettering.

91101 Swallow - to carry cast IC Swallow
91102 Swift
91103 Garganey
91104 Pochard
91105 Capercailie
91106 Herring Gull
91107 Seagull
91108 Peregrine
91109 Osprey
91110 Electra - to carry a cast GEC logo on one side and a cast BREL logo on the other
91111 Goshawk
91112 Pintail
91113 Curlew
91114 Cormorant
91115 Fulmar
91116 Whimbral
91117 Hobbey
91118 Sparrowhawk
91119 Bittern
91120 Guillemot
91121 Wild Swan
91122 Golden Eagle
91124 Kingfisher
91125 Falcon
91126 Kestrel
91127 Merlin
91128 Sea Eagle
91129 Queen Elizabeth II - to run with a DVT named Duke of Edinburgh (so Prince Philip's always being dragged/pushed around by the Queen)
91130 Great Snipe
91131 Golden Plover
91132 Gannet

You may have noticed that I've done my best to match them up with the original holders of the names. I also haven't had the temerity to use Mallard, as there can only really be one Mallard and she lives in York, Sea Eagle has shifted back one, since there is no 91123.

Now, in the racehorse tradition, for the HST power cars.

I'm trying to avoid names already used with this set. My knowledge of horseracing is sketchy, so if anyone can help me fill this lot in, then I am open to suggestions. I've included horses I've heard of (some of which might not be British) and any recent triple-crown winners. Other RAF squadrons based in the area (617 was at Scampton) would be another good idea. These names could transfer to a possible fleet of Class 90s brought in to replace the HSTs on Leeds services.

And finally, a series for any possible Class 67s for Aberdeen/Inverness services that use them.

67401 Highland Chieftain - obviously
67402 Earl Marischal - of Aberdeen
67403 William Wallace - Battle of Stirling Bridge
67404 Fair Maid - of Perth
67405 Thane of Fife - obviously

I tried to avoid the LNER A4 names (other than a few famous ones as a non to route history) and the obvious commerical ones.

I also tried to use some obsure ones to generate intrest from local commnities and maybe generate some educational opportunities. These can be rolled up with the no messin campaign to spread awareness to schools

That’s very, very good. I don’t think I can really better it. Although I would remove the “County of Tyne and Wear”, “County Durham” and “City of Durham” names to just leave “City of Newcastle” and “Durham Cathedral” representing their respective areas. In their places I’d have one class 91 named “White Rose”, and another named “Lindisfarne” (Or possibly use the "Holy Island" name from 43239), and therefore name the fairly similarly named 43239 "Stirling Castle" instead. Seeing as that still leaves one class 91 unnamed, I’d like to resurrect the “North Eastern” name.

I like the mix of personalities, organisations, famous events and geographical locations tied with the routes the trains operate, which is something I thought GNER did very well, but I think you have, if anything, bettered it. I’m not so keen on LE Greys proposal of naming the ECML stock after LNER Pacifics just for the sake of it: Loco names should reflect current trends and promote the route they operate on. They should be in keeping with the present day. However I would be keen on seeing the old A3 name "Dick Turpin" resurrected on a class 91: There has to be some sort of marketing opportunity for East Coast in "London to York in a day".

There’d be no hope at all of keeping the appropriate vinyled DVT operating with its’ namesake locomotive unfortunately, but I do think that giving the DVTs vinyl wraps advertising important features along the route is an excellent idea.

I may also be inclined to replace the “Aberdeen” name on 43238 with “Granite City” plates. Additionally, I’d just have one HST power car named George or Robert Stephenson (Or you could even have one name on one side and the other name on the other), and use the name “Bonnie Dundee” instead.

do the 91/DVT not run in fixed formation? that kind of messes up my money making plan!
The mark 4 rakes run in fixed formations, but the class 91s are regularly swapped between rakes as the maintenance schedules for the locos is entirely different to the carriages. The DVTs tend to be allocated to a particular carriage rake.

I suggest that "42 Commando" should be one - given East Coast's connection to Arbroath, the home of the unit. "Black Watch" would go down well with many locals, as well as enthusiasts...

Also, i've mentioned before, I like FGW's policy of naming power cars after Drivers who died in crashes. I find it quite a touching tribute. So, with the family's permission, we could have "Driver John Weddle", "Ray Robson" and "Paul Taylor"

What about the little towns they serve?

"Town of Stevenage"

What an exotic name that'd be :p

Well, if Lichfield can have a Pendolino named after it (It has city status), then the considerably larger Stevenage surely deserves a class 91 named after it! :p

Lambton Worm, surely!

There is also the Angel of the North (Clearly visible from the ECML as the train passes Tyne Yard), although that's in Gatesheed, so technically not Geordie Land. Somehow I can't see any locos or power cars being named "Penetration" any time soon...:o

Buffer-fitted 43162 Borough of Stevenage was shedded at Bounds Green, then transferred to Cross-Country, eventually Virgin.

In response to BlythPower, Bronte Sisters is probably quite relevant given East Coast's Skipton service (which calls at Keighley).

Dick Turpin won the 1933 Chester Cup, and was the source of yet another racehorse name for the ECML. Actually, the original highwayman who rode to York (from Kent) in a day was one John Nevison or "Swift Nick" as they called him. He must have had an exceptionally fast horse (or kept stealing freash ones on the way) and performed the feat to establish an alibi for a robbery.

My favourite A3 names, ones like Robert the Devil, Captain Cuttle, Bachelor's Button won all sorts of other races, and the Deltics continued this with Alycidon, Pinza, Ballymoss and so on. Even the 91s got in on the act with Double Trigger, which is why I'm so keen to see an update on the racehorse names with Red Rum, Desert Orchid and the rest. After all, Doncaster hosts the St Leger, and York and Darlington both have courses. Not to mention the implication of speed.

Ah, I hadn’t realised there was a race horse named after the highwayman of some renown, and that this is where the name of the A3 drew its’ inspiration. I think it’s widely accepted that rather than the one horse “Black Bess” performing the entire journey, that realistically Swift Nick would have changed horses en route. Although the one horse idea gives the story greater effect of course.

There were some quite inspirational sounding names on the A1, A2 and A3 Pacifics that were drawn from horse racing, but by the same token, there weren’t half some poor ones out of the bunch as well!

Buffer-fitted 43162 Borough of Stevenage was shedded at Bounds Green, then transferred to Cross-Country, eventually Virgin.
43162 was never a buffer fitted power car. But you're right on all other counts.

Talking of horses, may I recommend St Ledger? (as in the Doncaster race)

The best "named" locos (in my eyes) were the 47/7s, which included a lot of Saints, so this would be in a similar vein.

I Posted this on an earlier forum what do you reckon?

I'd like to see a mix of names all relevant to the East Coast Main Line Locality. Eg

91101 - 91110 Names of Main Rivers along the Route, Thames, Tyne, Tweed etc
91111 - 91120 Names of Railway Related People that has history on the ECML, George Stephenson, Robert Louis Stephenson, Sir Nigel Gresley (I know, I know) etc &
91121 - 91131 - Charity names such as Sir Bobby Robson, Marie Curie, Guide Dogs etc

I do love some of the suggestions on here aswell, DarloRich's effort was very good! :)

Thanks for your input! Keep it coming.

I tried not to use the older names taken form the LNER locomtives because i think times have moved on and many people would not recognise the names of race horses except those like Red Rum or Desset Orchid. However, most ( all?) the LNER horse names were for flat racers

i also tried to limit myself to places actually served by EC. I wanted, say, Sunderland in there but i will have to leave that to GC! I also tried to parcel out the names to represent as many of the stations as i could. I foprgot about Stevenage but they can have NSE name something and there is NOTHING about Retford

LE Grays - can you point out the race course in Darlington - must have missed it in the 30 years i lived there!:D:D:D:D ( there a course at Catterick 11miles away) Sedgefield ( 13 miles) or Redcar (23 miles) there used to be a course at what is now Teeside Park at Thonaby ( 11.3 miles away) All are ncie course but if you want a good day i out i would recommned a summer meeting at Ripon. Very nice!

Sprinterguy St Ledger is on the original list for 91122 AND i cant belive i forgot the Angel of the North! What can i take out?

Blyth/Max Bronte sisiters in in to represent West Yorkshire via the Skipton services

Bylth I agree with some of your suggestions but A1 Steam Locomotive Trust stays in as does County Durham as they serve Darlo! (unless i can have Darlington FC - FA Trophy Winners 2011:lol:) I would be tempted to replace County Durham with St Cuthbert. The Harrogate one was desperation. I need something better as it is a good way to attract tourists to the area via the train

Scotsman I like 45 Commando - Royal Marines A very Good idea. but which name to remove. I would suggest one of the Stephenson boys! (but which!)

and i would like Jack Carter but i tried to keep them to REAL people ( hard as Get Carter is one of my favorite films!)

That's OK, I wish I could forget about Stevenage. :D

Shows you what I know about horseracing. That came from a sign I once saw in a bookie's window.

Isn't there a course at Musselburgh?
