Bit of a mess tonight. No trains out for about an hour going north of Peterborough. Platforms full so no platforms for local trains. Seems a shame that LNER couldn’t have run at least one service to Grantham. They had four trains fully loaded and then cancelled them.

Currently very cosy on the 1834 to Peterborough

Grantham was full of trains, 2 LNER services with an EMT service also stood on the mainline.

Looks like a few LNER HSTs have been diverted via the Gainsborough Long with a southbound Hull Trains service.

Out of interest what happens to the drivers shift pattern if it gets into a situation where the start of their next shift is within 12 hours bringing the hidden regulations into play

They’re entitled to 12 hours off, it’ll be down to the TOC to re plan diagrams around that rule .

Is this the infamous section of line which had multiple incidents of the OLE being torn down in the past or is it somewhere else?

Was just about to post "That Retford OLE again"!

EDIT: NRE

A failure of the electricity supply between Newark North Gate and Retford has resulted in major disruption for trains travelling between Peterborough and Doncaster.

"Failure of the electricity supply" does not imply OLE damage.

The 5pm ex KGX has reached Grantham 3 hours late. The 5.30pm was terminated at Peterborough 1 hour late, passengers transferred to the late running 6pm which stopped to pick them up. The 6pm is now 90 mins late running round the diversionary route. I think the 6.30pm has been terminated at Peterborough. Heaven knows what's happening to later trains.

Looks like 1S23 1530 Kings Cross - Glasgow and 1A40 1615 Leeds - Kings Cross were the first services involved in each direction with 1A40 on the move 159 Late and 1S23 on the move 261 Late. A few services are now moving through the area now.

How many times in recent years has this sort of thing happened on the ECML? No other description for it other than a total disgrace and one for which every organisation with any sort of responsibility for should be absolutely ashamed.

The departure boards at Leeds were flooded with messages under the Manchester and London services advising to change at Manchester Piccadilly for services to London Euston so presumably some form of ticket acceptance was in place for LNER passengers with Virgin Trains / TPE - wonder how many passengers had a nice long trip to Manchester courtesy of a TPE stopper service!! :D

To make things worse there is a yellow warning for high winds through today (Thursday 29th) through much of England, so there is potential for further disruption.

What with this & the problem at Doncaster on the 23rd it’s not been a good week for the ECML.
Does anything like this happen on the WCML or the line between Norwich & Liverpool Street?

I noticed last night that the 1600 Kings Cross to Aberdeen having left KGX on time was expected at York some 4 hours 55 late. It was showing an ETA into Aberdeen of 0330! It was later cancelled short at Edinburgh.

Can't speak for the WC but yes the GE does suffer from the usual problems- signalling, track circuits and OHLE predominantly. There is also a larger number of level crossings that sometimes prove troublesome.
Time will tell whether the OHLE upgrade going on for crossrail will make a difference.

At least NRW- LST has a viable alternative via CBG although it can get quite cosy on a 170 North of Cambridge. During CSL2 you can usually send people via CBG using GN to KGX which helps as well.

It does seem like the ECML and LNER are having a pretty torrid time at the moment. The ppm table consistently shows them near the bottom.

Seems that something happened between Newark Northgate and Doncaster. The usual 21 minute journey between these took some 5 hours!!!

It was reported the issue was between Newark and Retford, so presumably that one and the following service which was also equally as late just have been the first trains stuck.

Apparently many pax became friends during the five hours delay! LNER staff were praised and that is very good to read about, as we get a lot of adverse comment about some staff on here.

My daughter said that at KGX it was suggested that she make her way to Euston to get a connection via Carlisle. But as this was at 6.15pm, there wouldn't have been a suitable connection. The nearest I got was 6.30pm departure from Euston then Warrington Bank Quay to Newton-le-Willows then to Newcastle arriving 11.24pm. But she couldn't have got to Euston to catch it. Instead the 6pm from KGX departed at 6.39pm and arrived at Newcastle at 11.21pm.
