I'd like to see some ECML/ MML services use Peterborough/ Luton/ Bedford as "pick up" / "set down" only. For example, I was on the 17.49 KX - Donny on Thursday night, which was a standing load from the Cross, but under half full after Peterborough. The same can happen on some MML services through Bedfordshire.

That is what VT had to do with Euston & Watford/some MKC, Glasgow & Motherwell and Piccadilly & Stockport. The services would be packed for 1/2 to these stations, then dead therefater. Luton and Bedford would be good on the MML, Peterborough and Stevenage on the ECML, and maybe some stations on the GWML

I think something like this is needed. It's a shame to introduce complications (which may confuse some passengers), but the demand for London - Reading/ Bedford/ Peterborough (etc) is always going to be so high that something will need to be done.

That'll be to avoid the joys (yes, I'm being sarcastic..) of FCC. If East Coast stopped at more places (or more regularly) south of Peterborough then people would use them hand over fist over FCC.

Going back to a post on the first page though, since when has Peterborough been in the North East?!!?:roll:

I can totally understand why passengers would rather take a faster 225 service compared to a slower FCC EMU; I'd do the same.

However, if seats on these long distance services weren't available to passengers making shorter commutes then we wouldn't need the same number of long distance trains over Welwyn.

I've stood from London to Peterborough a few times, only to find I can get a table to myself (for a journey to Yorkshire) once the commuters have got off...

Back to the Darlington thought.

I can remember standing twice from Grantham right through to Darlington, where the train literally emptied. There were no special events, no nothing, it was just jam packed!

Nuneato got shafted by that LM TV service... one Pendo and hour to London non-stop, one to Liverpool calling at Stafford, Runcorn. Now what has it got? Hardly an IC service...

FYI, Luton Midland's only IC train is the hourly Corbry/Corby-StP's. Thats it

The Liverpool service also called at MK and Crewe. Nuneaton didn't need that really, other than Peak, and it now has Peak services to/from London provided by the Liverpool and Chester services. A small inconvenience for the majority benefit.

No Stockport calls are PU/SD only. They were removed when VHF was launched. Higher ORCATS allocation, and the requirement to provide more local journey opportunities, as the VT allox royally shafted some local services. The Watford situation is to do with money settlement, nothing to do with loadings.

Think you'll find they called at MKC and Watford Jn alternately Gooid point, but you would be gutted if you lived in Nuneaton. You could/caan do Nun-Eus non-stop in about 1h00 to 1h05, couldn't guess how long it takes now.

Think you'll find Watford had 2 or 3 a day, MK had the majority. I lost count of the number of times I had to trek up to MK to get on the Liverpool service. Nuneaton now is only 1hr35, with connections at Rugby, so you can potentially slim it down to 1hr15.

To be honest my problems with the east coast mainline seem to follow Paul's. It is rare to get into York, Darlington or Newcastle heading north without a wait. Follow late xc trains a common situation going North. Going south delays into Waverley from Haymarket common as trains from Dunblane are let into Haymarket first dispite the dunblane service not supposed to arrive into Waverley until after the east coast service. It is rare to be allowed to overtake XC services at Dunbar and Darlington when the EC service is not scheduled to stop at them.

Then of course the stand issues of wires and level crossings don't help east coast.
