I will be travelling from London Kings Cross to Inverness this summer using a child all line rover. East Coast have told me that I can upgrade by paying the difference between the standard single and the first class single I think that, a £25 for a child, that is a great deal, which I am going to do!

I am assuming I will get a meal, drinks, snacks and free WiFi. As I have never travelled with EC, I was wondering what is likely to be offered?

Yes, but the WiFi varies quite a bit and is never wonderful.

We need to know which train(s) you are planning to use to predict what you will be offered. Timetables only seem to be up to 16th May at the moment, but if you have a look you can see by the colour coding what's currently on offer.

Then once you know what mealtime it is, http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/menus will show you what's on that week.

In terms of drinks, on my usual northbound journey (King's Cross -> Edinburgh) I'm normally offered hot drinks about 4 times, and cold drinks the same number of times. Presumably you can scale this up a wee bit for the longer journey to inverness.

For snacks, I tend to get one or two offers of a bag of crisps or a piece of fruit.

I find the wifi to be pretty useless - considerably worse than tethering to my phone.

Assuming the direct service, 1200 KGX-INV, this does not offer the Evening Meal option, but does offer the All Day menu so you will get something like a mini quiche. Full details are on the EC website, but the menu rotations may not go as far ahead as you are planning to travel.

The best time to do a trip to Scotland is between late May and early July, when you get the maximum daylight hours! So aim for the half-term break if you possibly can.

The £25 price is the Weekend First Supplement London - Inverness. It is not available Monday - Friday.

The complementary offer is much reduced at weekends. There is no hot food.

Thats what I thought, but they[EC] said it is the difference between the standard anytime and first anytime. As I am making a single journey on a child ticket, I make this to be £25, unless I am greatly mistaken!

For KGX-INV, I make that £105.75-£76.00 = £29.75
For other choices of from-to, it may indeed be £25, but either way I'd say its worth it!

So if anyone wanted to upgrade an ALR for London-Edinburgh, it's cheaper to upgrade to Inverness
