Was travelling from Kings Cross [[stn]KGX[/stn]] to Darlington yesterday (booked too late to get a reservation) and was very impressed with East Coast. Was due to get on the 1000, but 20 minutes before departure the tannoy announced an unscheduled service for those without reservations stopping only at Newcastle and Edinburgh. I stuck with the 1000 service but the extra train meant that the 1000 train was much quieter, with barely anyone standing. The staff were also excellent, letting standing passengers know whenever seats came up in other carriages.
So well done East Coast but I'm wondering how they managed to get permission for this extra service and where they managed to find the staff/train? Also, was it booked for that time or were they waiting to see when the station started getting busy?
