What got me as a driver that signs Kings Cross was that the "assessment" of the driver ended up in platform 0 at KX.Thats not used for diesels too much due to noise/fumes.

The driver really did make a big deal of having to stop in the exact position for allowing the refilling of the water tanks, but is that really such a problem for a driver? Probably not, although I guess being monitored could make anyone nervous.

The bigger problem is that the hoses are hooked up and then left for ages, meaning God knows how much water ends up overflowing end ending up all the track. Sometimes I wonder why King's Cross (or indeed the whole of London) isn't flooded.

(I do hope I haven't ruined a future episode, where we spend 40 minutes following the men and women that refill the tanks).

I think that was done for tv. Experienced drivers can line up their trains fairly accurately. What's interesting is how long it takes a trainee to get a feel for the train to be able to stop like that - can take many hundreds of hours driving.

The programme last night was actually a bit more entertaining. Still following a very small number of people, and it wasn't really necessary to have the whole programme about one football match (broken up by some guy following his favourite 80s rock band and some students with lots of cases), but despite that - it seemed like the best one so far for actually being more 'general' entertainment - rather than neither entertaining for Joe Public or those interested in the railway!

I guess the presence of the police and fans trying to attack other fans helped!

Dry trains only apply to those certain services which are designated dry trains, because of the likelihood of trouble. There is no general ban on football fans having alcohol on the train. Such a ban would probably lose the railways a fair bit of custom.

I've recorded all of the episodes so far and seem to spend an awful lot of time fast forwarding through tedious parts. The voice-over is just awful as well.

I'd have to say that when you consider that the program is on for an hour there must be 15 minutes worth watching.

3/10 for me.

Oh yes, definitely not something to watch live. You'll be almost 10 minutes in by the time you get through the introduction/advert for how good EC is.

And then there's the obligatory minute or so to tell you what's coming up after the break of a few minutes.

All standard practice on modern TV shows when people have such short attention spans.

Eps 2 & 3 were available on Sky on demand last night (certainly for Virgin customers.) The Mem and I sat watching eps 6 & 7 last night (though the EPG incorrectly had them listed as 7 & 9.)

Maybe 'he was' an actor brought in to show that you cannot get away with this type of claim, after all he was quite noticable if he made regular journeys from the Cross.

Yes, I think it was staged - and by someone doing a rather poor impression of what they perceived a chancer to sound/act like. The end result was something that looked ridiculous. At best it was genuine but the guy was acting up for the camera big time.

The usual don't believe everything you see on television rule. Remember when the BBC faked near misses on a driving school programme? Or Top Gear faking tests to match pre-scripted conclusions.

For one, given he wasn't just background 'detail', I'm sure someone would have got him to sign a release form so he can't have just disappeared. The crew film would have known where he went.

Anyway, not that it matters. The whole series comes over as one big ad with carefully managed scenes and setups.

The lass at Newcastle was right about not having to tolerate assaults by passengers / public, whether or not they try to use the excuse of being drunk. Hopefully the fellow concerned had a visit from the local constabulary.

I thought that was odd. One minute the camera crew are with him whilst the manager comes along and then suddenly he vanishes. You wouldn't let them get away with that!

I keep catching odd episodes of this on different channels at odd times - and it's really not terribly convincing in parts is it?

Staged? Surely not!

Latest was the "Day in the Life of the Sir Bobby Robson Train" (sic) episode in which the set turns into a HST at one point, and a passenger whips out their harp to entertain her fellow passengers.

I think the 'Begging' thread identified the relevant bye-law which was being broken!

That bacon was perfectly cooked, for my liking. I hate the limp, half grey, just cooked stuff. Crispy and with brown colour, now that's bacon. Gladly have mine served like that.
And yes, it is a long advert for East Coast, as such it is a great success.

It's not the BBC, and it's painfully obvious. Nobody makes fly on the wall like the Beeb. As mentioned here several times, I feel I'm watching an hour long advert for East Coast, with adverts in between!

The Mk4s are still more than capable of 140. The 91s would probably require a tweak of some kind to re-enable full power past 125
