Forgive me for being an idiot but is there major engineering work north of Newcastle which is sending it via Carlisle and presumably Carstairs? And would that be Leeds-Newcastle-Carlisle or just Leeds-Carlisle?

The following alterations will apply:
No trains will run between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Berwick-upon-Tweed
An hourly service will run between Newcastle and Edinburgh via Carlisle
Passengers travelling to / from Morpeth, Alnmouth and Berwick-upon-Tweed are advised to use CrossCountry services
Passengers travelling to / from Dunbar are advised to use the replacement buses running between Berwick-upon-Tweed and Edinburgh

I wouldn't rule out the short Eurostars coming back. Think about it SNCFs lease ends in a couple of months and eurostar will probably not want them all sitting in the depot or paying for them to be stabled so will want an operator to keep them ticking over and out of there way......

It was because they were restricted to 110mph so they were kept on Leeds services where they could keep to time.

One more time: they were INITIALLY restricted to 110. That was later changed to allow 125 running south of Grantham only.

They have good capacity and were popular with passengers but there were issues with the longer dwell times compared to mk3 or mk4 stock.

Send them to VT for them to use on the BHM runs then and lend some pendos to east coast? (I've heard stupider ideas from the DFT)

Not a daft idea Nym. I would go one step further. If TOCs had any EMUs in storage or surplus to requirements, then these could be made available on short-term lease.
