Yorkshire Post and Yorkshire Evening Post are doing the £8 offer again, have to collect 4 tokens in both cases. May be other papers doing it as well, but haven't seen any just yet. Interestingly last time the YEP had the offer on you had to collect 6 tokens, so it has gone back to collecting the 4 tokens as previously.

More info on the respective paper sites.

The Northern Echo have done it in the past - it is quite a good offer but you had to collect something like a weeks worth of papers/tokens

But that's fine for the people who generally get the paper everyday ;)

Probably save you more than the price of the papers. Could always chance it, I've only been asked for the tokens once. I could probably use the same tokens from last year and they wouldn't notice.

It is very rare to be asked for tokens. It does happen occasionally, as a small number of people have noted that they have been asked once for tokens (out of many journeys). I have never been asked.

There is no way for the guard to know what tokens may be required, as all the tickets say "Reader Offer" - that's for all newspapers and EC's own promotions where you can download a voucher. So how can the guard ask for something when he / she doesn't actually know what they are asking for?

There is an £8 offer that does not mention tokens at all here:-

If these have the ticket type of "Reader Offer" then that would be interesting. I do not know what the ticket type is as I've not bought any under this particular offer, can anyone confirm?

That is a different offer, only shows Advance as the ticket type, and allows £8 single between any station on EC AFAIK (someone on here recently said they had booked a trip to Inverness for £8, possibly from as far as KGX). The newspaper promos start at £8 single, but are only available for stations in that geographic area (Yorkshire Post/YEP for stations such as York, Leeds, Hull, Wakefield). Hartlepool Mail will probably be advertised as Darlington.

2010 tokens included the superbreak logo because there was an associated hotel offer. 2011 tokens omit this.

These are the stations mentioned in the newspaper advert, but following the link provided takes me to a part of the East Coast site (eastcoast.co.uk/yorkshirepost) which allows me to buy, for example, a Reader Offer promotional ticket on the 0755 Inverness - Edinburgh for £6.50, instead of the lowest Advance ticket which is £10, reduced to £8.90 with the 11% online booking discount.

This offer's ticket type is EC FLAT FARE.

That is interesting John, I've never needed to go from a station other than the one included in the small print (normally Newcastle, Leeds or York). Will have a look and see if I can get some decent haulage to somewhere I've never been before.
