Around 1am there was an earthquake.

They're reporting it on Sky News now. The centre of the earthquake seems to be around the Midlands. It was a 4.8 on the richter scale.

It's been felt in Leicestershire, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, West Mids, Norfolk, East Anglia and Bedfordshire.

Yes, from Yorkshire, to the SE, taking in most of the Midlands. Never felt it myself, but looks like most people have.

Yeah, we felt it quite strong. I wasn't even on the floor at the time. It shook me on the sofa! Scared the buggery outta me.

Yes the ground shook here in the 2nd city for about 15 seconds just before 1am and scared the life out of Pebbles,but Tiddles just slept on

Anyone remember Dudley earthquake of 2002,now that one was scary

Was just looking on the BBC site about this, seeing if anything was on there. I felt it here darn sarf, when all was dead silent before then suddenly my TV stand above my head started vibrating, followed by the whole house for about 7 seconds. I have to say, if the power went out then I'd probably have just froze in my chair (for longer than I did staight after it!) I initially thought it was my brother banging on my wall (as he does), before then realising no amount of banging he could do would make the house shake

I felt nothing in Ash Vale (surprising as it's only about 2 miles from Coxster), so I'm feeling quite left out. It might be I was just too distracted playing GTA at the time.

Just East of Gainsborough it is, 4.7 on the Richter scale, so maybe the odd chimney pot in Lincoln fell over. Slightly smaller than the Dudley quake.

I felt nothing in Ash Vale (surprising as it's only about 2 miles from Coxster), so I'm feeling quite left out.

Well, I can't be the only one who felt it in 'our' area as the BBC are including London and the Thames Valley areas in their report. It's also a tad more than two miles if e're being exact

The British Geological Survey (BGS) said magnitude of 5.3 and the epicentre was near Market Rasen in Lincolnshire.

Woke me up at around 12.55, various things rattled. I obviously tensed up as when I moved I pulled a few muscles and still ache. Did wonder if I'd dreamt it, but got up and had a look round the house as I thought (a) something might've collaped or (b) there was someone in the house. Even this morning I got up and looked at the roof as I though perhaps something had gone wrong there. Only when I got in the car and put the radio on did I discover there had actually been an earthquake and I hadn't deamt it!

Maybe I'm just a sensitive guy...
Or maybe its the fact that I live on the top floor of an unstable building.

Luckily I was half asleep, so was not in a fit state to be scared or worried.

They've now upped it to 5.3 (which is a bigger increase than you might think as it's a logarithmic scale), however what I don't quite get is this for example, "It was quite severe. I experienced the Dudley one and this was more severe. " from someone in the West Midlands. Yet they are around 100 miles from it, so why did it feel more severe to them than one 5. was right on their doorstep, which was claimed to be 5.0?

The answer may be complicated, as "intensity and thus ground effects depend not only on the magnitude, but also on the distance to the epicenter, the depth of the earthquake's focus beneath the epicenter, and geological conditions (certain terrains can amplify seismic signals" (Wikipedia)

Yeah...it will track down the fault lines and thus any other places on the same fault will receive a stronger earthquake than (closer) places which are not on the fault lines.

What earthquake? I was sitting in bed, didn't feel or hear owt. Altho I do live about 45 meters from the M54 which tends to create enough noise and vibration on its own

Well, I live about 7 miles west of wolverhampton, and I didn't feel anything, and I was fully awake watching tv, and the M54 is about 2 miles away

The M54 is nowt. When I live at home backing on to the railway, there's a perfectly timed approx 0530ish train to Ironbridge that wakes me up if I'm sleeping lightly without fail.

Living in Loughborough atm though, said earthquake merely bounced me on the bed a few times.
