earth tremor in Cumbria

Cumbria earth tremor reported by local residents

There have been reports of a large earth tremor has been felt across much of Cumbria.
People have described hearing and feeling the earth moving "for well over a minute" at just after 2300 GMT.
It was felt as far afield as Barrow, Sellafield, Cockermouth, Windermere and Penrith.
Police say there are no reports of injury or damage so far, but say the tremor was picked up by the US Geological Survey.

Anyone here experience it?

We had one in York a few years ago, and another a few years before that. Not something you expect to happen! Would you feel it on a train, I wonder?

My mum said she felt it as did a couple of other people in Carlisle. I had my feet up so couldn't really tell

I didn't feel this one ( was asleep ) but I did feel the Market Rasen one a couple of years ago here in Epsom!

Each red spot is an earthquake / tremor within the past 30 days; the size of the spot relates to the intensity of the incident. If you click on "recent events" at the top left of the map, the top litem on the drop down menu provides a list of the data for each of them.

You'd be surprised just how many times the earth moves for people in this country...(!)

@Peter Mugridge; and those are only the ones they can be bothered to put on. Typically there are over a thousand readings a day from the hundreds of thousands of iSeismos stationed around the country!

Yes - I think they have a cut off at a certain magnitude otherwise it would swamp the data?

They're all recorded and analysed (briefly). The data centre at Staines HQ is massive for that purpose! But yes, there's a threshold for the readings (which I can't remember) and if it's particularly interesting the DAs will put them on anyway or if they have particular requests. Just like here, there are swarms of over-interested twitchers and wildlife watchers who want to know what went on in their back garden!

I felt it. My whole house shook. At first, I thought it was a vehicle accident on the busy road near my house (a few accidents on there have caused the house to shake), but I mentioned it to some friends, who said they all felt the same thing. The next I knew, people from other parts of Cumbria were saying on facebook that they'd felt it, then came the reports of the tremor on Sky News!
