Idle curiosity really

Over the last few weeks I've been buying E tickets through the South Eastern Website. I have an account there

I have to travel from Ramsgate to Denmark Hill and return on Friday. The E Ticket option is not available (I also tried through TrainLine). And I put in a few other dates to check if it was something to do with the Bank Holiday with the same result

I can easily enough buy at the station (or pick them up there). I suspect I am being thick but am I missing something?

e-Tickets are only available between some stations; a common reason is that some stations still lack the e-Ticket scanners at ticket barriers, so you can only enter the station with a physical ticket. London stations are common offenders here, I believe.

Your ticket is probably with a Maltese Cross which means you can use it between London termini on the Underground, and the Underground does not (currently) take e-tickets.


There are tickets which don't allow Underground travel (see https://www.brfares.com/!expert?orig=RAM&dest=DMK for more detail) such as
NOT UNDERGROUND
NOT LONDN/EBBSFT
so if these meet your requirements then you can probably buy them as e-tickets (and they're probably cheaper too).

That's a lot of information

I don't know if that makes sense as - as is probably apparent - this isn't something I know much about

I'll be changing at Bromley South both ways and have selected the appropriate trains (avoiding St Pancras) but still can't seem to do it

I have a senior railcard if that makes any difference

Aah cracked it now

One of the trips was showing a change at Victoria. I've amended that and have the E ticket option

If you follow this link and change the settings at the top to "Flexible" and "Cheapest" it should show the fares you're after (the Forum will make a small amount of money if you buy through the link, no extra cost to you). You may also want to adjust the times as I just chose some random ones (though as a flexible ticket it's valid on any train)!

NOT LONDN/EBBSFT ("not valid via London Terminals or Ebbsfleet") tickets from Ramsgate to Denmark Hill can now indeed be fulfilled by e-ticket.

As jfollows suggests, the includion of the Maltese Cross (for cross-London Tube transfers) currently nukes the possibility of a fare being delivered as an e-ticket (though Southeastern will offer such fares on their Key Smartcard).

Glad you managed to sort it.
Avoiding London is a perfectly sensible option, too; I went (Clapham North-) Denmark Hill-Whitstable a couple of years ago with a change at Chatham, for example.

Bit of a minefield these E tickets/fares etc. I am used to buying at the station but I prefer this option - queues/ someone asking about multiple journeys (as yesterday) etc etc

I agree about avoiding London. Try to if I can as it's more pleasant

The only fly in the ointment is my intended train back. There is a change at Bromley South which allows 5 minutes. IIRC I have to change platforms over a bridge. Sciatica and arthritis may make that a challenge especially if the train from Denmark Hill is running late!

Bromley South has lifts as well as the stairs. Arriving from the Denmark Hill direction, be at the very back of the train to be nearest these.

Your ticket will be valid on later trains, but in future if you wish to only obtain itineraries with additional interchange time, the forum's site lets you do that!

To do this, click on 'advanced options', specify the change station, click "change at" and then input the number of additional minutes interchange time you require.

The additional minutes you specify are added onto the predetermined minimum interchange time (at most stations this is typically 5 mins but it can be more or less than this).

If I don’t make the stairs/lift transition I only have half an hour to wait for a Dover Priory train - then another (shortish) wait somewhere between Rochester and Faversham so not too bad

Hopefully the buffet at Bromley South will be open and accessible!

Times are variable as having a scan at Kings College. Other option looks like TL changing at Rochester
