E-tickets on London Underground?

About to purchase a flexible open return ticket via LNER website to travel from Somerset to London Terminals that is also valid to any London Rail Terminal accorfin

I understand that I can use this to get from Paddington to London Bridge by tube to save me having to purchase tube tickets.

A couple of questions if you don't mind...

1) Does it need to be a paper ticket or can I use an e-ticket?

2) I assume that the ticket is only valid on the tube on the day of departure and return - so how would it know if I used it before my actual return date - or would it only work once on the tube?
(not planning to use it any more than the one, but curious)

3) I assume there are not issues in finishing my journey at London Bridge Underground and that I do not need to do anything at London Bridge Train station?

4) There is an underground option for an extra £3.50 per person, but I assume the only difference is that the journey can end at any tube station and then be used for the rest of the day?
(again how would it know if we used it for more than our return and cheated (not that we would) as it is open)

Depending upon the answer to 1) maybe this is why needs to be a paper ticket to avoid multiple uses? Don't know.

You cannot use a ticket to London Terminals on the Tube in central London*. You would need a ticket to London Zone 1 for that. For the Western it will only be valid to Paddington or Waterloo depending which train you use to get there (and NOT for the Tube between them). It is valid to the relevant London terminals for your route, not all of them as you prefer.

The "Tube option" is likely to be a ticket to London Zone U1, which can be used for one return Tube journey within Zone 1 and cannot be issued as an e-ticket as the Tube gatelines don't accept them. But it might be something else, we can check if you can tell us the exact journey.

If you do buy the London Zone U1 version you can use the return on any day within validity but only once.

* I added this as there are exceptions outside central London where Tube and National Rail lines share the route, e.g. parts of the Met and Bakerloo.

You can go to London Bridge by changing at Reading and Waterloo/Waterloo East on a London Terminals Ticket. If you want to go via Paddington and the tube you need a ticket to London U1.

A ticket to London Terminals is not valid beyond Paddington. It could conceivably be used to get to London Bridge by changing at Reading and then travelling to Waterloo and on from Waterloo East to London Bridge but has no validity on London Underground across central London.

The journey can end at any tube station in the zones stated, but has no further validity.

If the route shown on the ticket has a + or † symbol then the ticket includes the cost of travelling between certain London Stations (e.g. between Liverpool Street and Paddington) by either London Underground, Docklands Light Railway (DLR) or Thameslink services as appropriate to the route of the journey being made. Tickets will only be accepted by London Underground and DLR up to the last day of validity of the ticket and until 04:29 the following day. Other than to change trains, a break of journey at intermediate London Underground or DLR stations is not permitted.

Bit confused, but I accept the members here know the rules

If the route shown on the ticket has those symbols, yes.

A ticket to London Terminals will never* have those symbols, which are generally there for cross-London travel, e.g. a ticket from Bletchley to Brighton might be routed +LONDON or +ANY PERMITTED (I forget which it actually is) to allow use of the Victoria Line (or whatever else you fancy) between Euston and Victoria.

Normally it would do this if you were going to say Somerset to Essex then you may have the Maltese Cross added. However since it is London Terminals as others have said, that is applicable only to the relevant terminal of your route.

Interestingly though those conditions have not yet included the Elizabeth Line. You can always use a contactless bank card as opposed to purchasing a tube ticket for that last bit that you need to do in Z1.

Buying the LU ticket I guess will save a couple of pounds..... as I think it is capped at £5 per person per day in zone 1?

If you don't hold a railcard it will save you about 20p over using contactless. Of course, what's best will depend on whether you are making any further journeys. Is London Bridge your final destination?

A Single fare of contactless / oyster card adult without railcard is £2.50
Daily capping in Zone 1-2 is £7.70.

If OP is going to do more than 2 trips in the day (including any bus or tube or other TfL services or national rail services), using contactless / oystercard may be a better idea, than getting a travelcard / U1 fare option.

SailRail tickets from the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man. I believe it's a result of the zonal fare system for these tickets.
