Apart from when it insists on sending all the Google Wallet tickets to everyone, rather than just the one you specifically asked it to send!
It seems like on the website there are separate options for sending all the tickets (Google Wallet only) or just the one to either Apple or Google. I can't actually test it right now, since I only bought one ticket for the current journey!

I can imagine me getting confused and thinking the "(Google Wallet only)" in the top option meant "This is the only option you can use for Google Wallet". The only reason I was completely certain was because I was going through the flow in response to this conversation

The scanning software checks periodically (for me on TTK, every 5-10 minutes) for scan data where a ticket may have been used.

Note that it doesn’t need to rely on the internet if it’s the same device scanning the same ticket both times - it’s not that uncommon to have two customers with the same eTicket on each of their phones and I get shown the same one the second time!

That must be an interesting conversation. Obviously a genuine mistake on their part.

In TRU156 TfL briefly note the Barcode 2.0 project, though not by name.

However, the biggest issue is that we have a significant number of LU interchange stations that have National Rail platforms (these are all listed in T&R Book 6) where customers correctly use NR issued tickets that are valid at [our] gatelines, even if they are produced in a barcoded format.

Although these can be visually inspected by LU staff and customers then manually allowed in/out, this can become difficult during peak periods and somewhat reduces the efficiency of our ticket gates.

It has been accepted by TfL, the Rail Delivery Group (RDG) and the Department for Transport (DFT) that at these stations, we will need to introduce some form of barcode scanning technology into our gates and overcome the issues of costs, system compatibility and training.

Due to the obstacles to be overcome, current timescales are unlikely to see this technology included in the gates at around 20 of our stations until 2028.

Meanwhile some of their Revenue Control staff are now involved in the handheld scanner scheme (recently labelled Operation Aztec*) as well whenever they operate at the six stations quoted in post #108.

[* Yes, they've finally figured it out!]

To partially answer my own question from a few months ago, scanning Merseyrail Day Saver QR codes does not open the Vix gates.

The barcode scanners light up briefly but the NFC reader ring reacts differently depending on the station (three of which I used yesterday); at Southport it turned red whereas at Central / Moorfields it didn't react at all. The Southport gates also have "QR CODES ⬇" stickers, so I suspect the functionality hasn't even been enabled at Merseyrail's central Liverpool stations.

That's amusing, since I tried some Liverpool Vix gates a few days ago and none of the scanners which I tried were even switched on!

Maybe I'll go and visit Southport with a real E-Ticket rather than Merseyrail's barcode Day Saver ticket.

Aside from noting a refresh of the handheld scanning equipment, TRU160 also includes an update on Operation Aztec.

POST-OPERATION AZTEC SCANNING RESULTS

Following the conclusion of Operation Aztec, a targeted enforcement campaign undertaken by Revenue Control, we have recently collated the scanning results recorded by station colleagues since March 2026.

Operational Performance Metrics
In total 7,378 scans were recorded across all locations.

Comparison to Network-Wide Fare Evasion
According to recent data produced by TfL, network-wide fare evasion for London Underground is estimated to be 5%.

Five out of the six stations exhibited barcode failure rates that exceeded this benchmark.

Farringdon (15.4%), Stratford (8.3%), Finsbury Park (7.9%), Old Street (5.9%), Kentish Town (5.6%) all trend higher than the network norm.

The main disclaimer here is that we are still working to understand much of the data being collected and some of these results may be reduced by the differences between the way NR and LU routes work.

By continuing to gather the data and hear constructive feedback from staff, it will all help towards the introduction of barcode readers into LU gates.

Difficult to know what the "barcode failure rate" comprises. Given it's a new operation: Do they have all the public keys they should have (you'd think they would, but just look at PlusBus!), for example.

Not sure what they're getting at with this?

I imagine cases like someone legitimately breaking their journey, scanning their e-ticket and the system rejecting it. This would add to the failure statistics, but wouldn't be misuse of a NR ticket. On LU, there is no break of journey.

Ah, I assumed they'd be recording proper statistics rather than assuming the handheld device is in a position to do anything more than check the very basics!
