E* ticket - different name?

I need to buy some Eurostar tickets for later travel but don't know which of a few people is travelling yet. It will be for travel to Paris Nord.

If I buy them in person, do I need to give the traveller details?

Or can I buy it online and just wing it even if the name is different to the passport - I saw a thread on here from last year suggesting they do not check passports against tickets, which makes sense when you have 800+ on a train, but just wanted to check this was still the case..

I'm pretty sure that passport checks are completely separate from ticket checks.

12. You may not transfer your ticket to anyone else
Tickets already partly used, or made out in a passenger's name, are non-transferable and may only be used by the person for whom the ticket has been purchased. Tickets may not be offered for sale except by Eurostar International Limited or its authorised agents. If a ticket is resold or transferred for profit or other commercial gain, it will become invalid and the holder may be refused access to the Eurostar train.

Airlines and ferries have to keep a record of the names of all international passengers (manifest), so a different person can't just turn up and pretend to be someone else.
I can't remember if Eurostar is exempt from this requirement.

I travelled FROM Paris to London last Saturday (28th June) at 17:13.
I had a print at home ticket. I scanned to bar code on the ticket to get through the barriers.

I then had to present my Passport to French boarder control and after that to British boarder control. Neither asked to see the train ticket.

After baggage scanning I waited in the departure hall until boarding the train.

No E* staff asked to see either my ticket or passport before boarding or during the journey.

There was a British boarder control area to walk through at STP after leaving the train but they only stopped a few people.

I've heard people say that they've bought Eurostar tickets from Deutsche Bahn in the UK (Tel. 08718 80 80 66) and the tickets issued do NOT have names on them.

Strictly speaking though, most railway tickets are non-transferable aren't they? Certainly in the UK anyway......

I understand that group tickets for tours also don't have name son them. Neither Eurostar nor the immigration officials seem to care about anything but their primary task. Eurostar just want to make sure everyone has a valid ticket and are on the correct train, border control just want to make sure that every passport is OK. I've never seen any cross checking at all.

If you ring Eurostar up and explain then they will advise you best. Chances are you can just go ahead and book but better be safe than sorry.

DB tickets which are sent by post (not print at home) and therefore don't need an ID check on German trains don't have names on them.

In fact due to the utmost stringent German laws on privacy, even online booked and printathome tickets are NOT tied to your ID-but only numerical to the form of ID (as cred cd, Bahncard etc.) indicated by the booker whilst booking. This leads to problems if booked long before and the cred cd used for that has been lost/stolen.

Yes, the name appears on print at home tickets, but as dutchflyer confirms (I'd suspected this), it isn't binding.
