If northern are keen to get rid of the 153's surely it would also make sense to try and salvage some more stock and also get rid of the 155's?

It is all a bit complicated at the moment with the EMR fleet and plans have been changing regularly so it may be that further members of the class (or indeed the 158s too) aren't currently available.

Would that not mean adding a new place to maintain the 156s? Currently they’re split between Heaton and Newton Heath, wouldn’t you then have to allocate some to Neville Hill or Hull? Surely that would be more complicated?

It would be nice if we could have these to replace the 150's on the Hallam stoppers. I expect we won't get them though.

Yes I remember the notice of apology for the internal state of the four ex Northern 156s when they arrived.
Something which became somewhat ironic later into EMT's franchise, given the shocking state both the local and intercity fleets got into. Had a 222 that was in far worse condition than pretty much anything "Dutch Northern" had*.

*= one possible exception being the 142 which had several benches missing on a Huddersfield to Wakefield run in around 2015.

"Old" Northern's 156's were absolutely splendid until the current lot started ripping the seats out.

Yes the 156’s are to replace the 153’s which are non PRM compliant and only have dispensation until 31st May. Although they are very rarely used. I drove my first one in about 6 months on Monday as an ECS move from Sheffield to Huddersfield from where it continued with another 153 to Newton Heath. The 156’s will be based at Newton Heath. As to dates it’s all dependent on West Mids introducing the 196’s to release the 170’s to East Mids to release the 156’s.

Suspected they’d be based at Newton Heath when they land. Assume more 158s/150s will move west to replace any remaining 153 diagrams on this side.
