Is the following valid:

Out: Direct train Durham to King's Cross
Return: Liverpool Street to Cambridge, break overnight, Cambridge to Peterborough, then direct train to Durham.

I believe it is looking at the Routeing Guide, but I'd appreciate having someone else check it over first - also, are AGA going to be fussy about it?

This used to be fine and I have just checked using the East Coast journey planner. If you search for Durham to London via Audley End you will find that the usual Durham-London tickets are valid for the route Liverpool Street-Cambridge-Ely-Peterborough-Durham

Be warned that gateline staff at Liverpool Street do not like people doing that so you may need to argue your case and stand firm, even purchasing a new ticket and seeking a refund afterwards in the worst case scenario. I have had several friends who had problems there using tickets to various East Coast and MML destinations.

Is that "do not like it" as in completely ignore and refuse to check the permitted routes? Mmmm...

... if they even know what "permitted routes" are, let's put it this way.

I have never heard as many reports of refusal of legitimate tickets as those from that station.

Do you think they'd be alright at Liverpool Street with a Cardiff - Cambridge ticket?

I need to travel that way soon but I don't fancy going via Kings X as I've cleared the ECML for track but need the Anglia route.

I think Cambridge would be fine. The reports I heard all relate to destinations on the MML and ECML.
