On an off peak return.

I know the quickest, but what permitted route would be the most interesting. Specifically is via Carlisle and Dumfries OK?

via Manchester and Barrow is down as a permitted route although it is excluded by easement 700399 (i.e. don't try it)

Though via Carlisle is ok, Dumfries doesn't appear to be.

I agree. But for an extra £5, a £76.50 offpeak return from Durham to somewhere like Partick is valid via Dumfries and Glasgow Central. It is also valid for abandoning your outward journey at Glasgow Central and for starting your journey back from Glasgow Central (restriction code 3V).
