Hello,

I'm trying to get the cheapest Durham-London return I can, with a 16-25.

I'm free to travel any time of day, but ideally want to be in London by early evening (say 1900) on the 17th. Coming back on the 18th, but ideally not leaving before 0900.

I've tried a few different routes, going from Newcastle/Darlington/Sunderland instead, and the cheapest I've managed to find is £26.75 Durham-London, and £20.90 London-Durham (Both EC advances, booked through EC to get the discount).

Grand Central's £15 offer is tempting, but would get me into London too late, and leave too early

Can anyone find any crafty tricks to shave a few quid off?

You can always try the link in my signature regarding GC, there's quite a few offers right now - but i doubt you'll get better than £26.75 or £20.90.

Unless you're willing to go very late at night, the £26.75 and £20.90 are the standard charges from Durham.

Two tips:
* First class with a 16-25 railcard can sometimes be £29. Check the £26.75 fare train in particular, there's no good reason not to upgrade for £3!

* Try splitting at either Doncaster, or Newark and York. You can sometimes work it down to under £20, but remain on the same train. You can often find at least one train for which you can pull it down a pound or two

Examples for your journey:

Durham - Doncaster 16:37, £11.15 in first class
Doncaster - London 17:54 (same train) £14.10

Alternatively, split at York and Newark and this train is £22, standard class throughout

Gets you in at 19:45. Any earlier and you can only save by changing trains en route. However, given the amount saved, I don't think it's worth having to change!

Check megabusplus from York as Well.. Involves Coach to East Midlands Parkway and Train into St Pancras. I got a single for £9.00 takes around 4 1/2 hours.. but for the price, not really bothered
