Hi all,

I'd like to visit some friends in Hellifield on 27/12, returning 28/12. On the way I'd like to do the Settle-Carlisle in its entirety, returning via Leeds. I imagine the cheapest way is a Newcastle-Hellifield off-peak return and a single Durham-Newcastle. Can anyone do any better than that (2 adults with Y-P)?

Thanks,

Mark

For a start,

Newcastle - Hellifield
Route Any Permitted
Off-Peak Return
£39.00 Y-P

is pointless for your itinerary. Instead of this, you should get

Newcastle - Hellifield
Route Carlisle
Anytime Return
£18.40 Y-P

with a change-of-route excess into the Route Any Permitted ticket for the return portion only. This excess costs half the difference between the two fares so is approximately £10.30, giving a total of £28.70.

Even better, using the mechanism mentioned above,

Durham - Hellifield
Route Carlisle
Anytime Return
£22.05 Y-P

can be similarly excessed to

Durham - Hellifield
Route Leeds
Off-Peak Return
£35.80 Y-P

for the return portion only. The excess is approximately £6.90, giving a total of just under £29, however there is no need to purchase a separate ticket in this case.

I think that I've managed to get it down it £22.50 per person with a YP railcard using a SOR and SDS combination. I've sent him a PM with the details as ATOC may be watching. Can anyone beat this price?

Looking at the Routing Guide again I think that I've got it down to £19.25! (a Darlington to Durham single is involved)
