Dunston Coal Staiths

Here's something a bit different that I took on the way home from work tonight.



Built by the North East Railway in 1890, Dunston Staiths were used to load coal arriving via train from the North Durham coalfields onto ships. They were used until the 1970s and were finally closed in the 80s. The staiths were restored and reopened as part of the National Garden Festival in 1990 but have remained derelict since. Part of the structure was damaged by fire in 2003.

It is claimed that the staiths are currently the largest wooden structure in Europe.

I never managed to get shots of any of the staithes when they were in use, but I visited Blyth Cambois in 1989 and had a look at West Blyth staithes, which were very impressive:

There are a few different ones around the North East. These ones at Dunston had a section burnt out a few years ago so you can't (officially) get onto them now. The ones at Blyth have been restored I think, so are probably a better example.

The first one was taken back in November on my way home from work, so would have been just after 5. The second was taken on Wednesday at around 8pm.

I can just about remember when it was refurbished for the garden festival (including the giant ball of string ), shame you can't get onto is these days.

It sure is a shame, maybe some well deserved lotto money could be called for then? I feel that if this were still open it would be a fantastic place to get some various shots
