For a start London Midland site is showing
Advance Single £16.50 available only on the 06:05 departure from Dundee
arrives 11:35 changing Haymarket & Bolton.
Advance Single for return journey £13.00 departing at 11:05 and arriving 18:30 changing Bolton, Oxenholme Lake district for a coach to Carlisle then VT to Haymarket for Scotrail service forward.
Lets see if the splitting experts can get this down...

Just given it a quick go but it seems all the usual suspects are out with splits as they're incredibly difficult to get down.
DEE - SOP £78.40 SVR No restrictions
I tried splitting at Glasgow, Carlisle, Lancaster, Oxenholme, Preston, Liverpool, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Darlington, Leeds, even York but no joy.
My gut instinct says that splitting via ECML might be cheaper and my best effort comes at splitting via EDB.
DEE - EDB £20.70 SVR EC Only Not between 0115 and 0400 inc. outward
EDB - SOP £59.90 SVR No restrictions
Still more expensive than the through ticket though.
Does anyone know any dodgy places to split?

To be fair, They appear to be the cheapest options. Splitting the tickets will only save you pennies, if that. I had a quick look at the East Coast sight to see if there was any cheaper tickets travelling via the ECML, but the cheapest showing when I specified via York was £20 each way.

If you were doing a day return, then there would be more of a chance of savings. Some long distance journeys that are returning a different day can't be brought down by splitting, and this may be one of them.
If you don't mind being tied to specific trains, you are probably best off with the Advance fare suggested by bnsf734.
