Curiously enough I've passed through Carlisle several times (the old Midland Scot Glasgow/Edinburgh - West Midlands didn't stop on the Up, though it did on the Down). But plenty of others I've never passed non-stop - Inverness, Perth, Preston, Plymouth ... etc etc

Very few people do long journeys such as Dundee, or even Edinburgh, to Newquay by rail. It's similar on the Mrches Line, though there are some people like myself who will travel from south west Wales to Manchester, most of the other passengers are using the services for journeys like Carmarthen to Swansea, Cardiff to Newport, Cwmbran, Abergavenny or Hereford, Ludlow to Crewe, and so on.

I've mentioned it before on another thread but there always seems to be at least one person going through to Haverfordwest or Milford Haven leaving Manchester, but indeed there's not many. What's more impressive though are the ones going to there who get on at Crewe; you'd be amazed how many Aberdeen-Milford Haven tickets you'll see! And not just by using the sleeper either although that's probably the most sensible way of doing it.

Indeed. I'm much more comfortable with Welsh pronunciation than I am with Gaelic or English!

I know that on at least one line in Wales, the English guards get crib sheets listing how to pronounce the welsh stations. Very important part of route learning, although it doesn't help solve the Shrewsbury/Shrowsbury arguments we get occasionally.

Incidentally, I learnt basic Gaelic in school and it doesn't help one bit when it comes to Welsh announcements!

I've always wondered if the TMs on those long distance XC services bother listing all stations before departure?

And not just by using the sleeper either although that's probably the most sensible way of doing it.

As long as the ticket isn't priced by XC in which case it's an Anytime!

Could it be something to do with the oilfields off Aberdeen and the Puma Oil storage depot at Milford Haven, I wonder?

I doubt they're bringing the oil down in their suitcases. But yes, there are oil industry links at either end of that flow, and I dare say that a lot of the same skills are required. Why hire two welders when you can pay one welder the occasional bit of travel money?

I assume it is indeed oil related. But by the time they get to Crewe they usually look so knackered it seems cruel to engage them in conversation to find out!

I was ment to be doing an ALR earlier this year and had a PLY>EDB HST move in there, most likely with a WEF Upgrade!
As it happened I was hit by the RBS Payments thing so never happened sadly. Maybe next time.
