Next Saturday (11th) I am travelling from Dunbar to Berwick-upon-Tweed. There are few direct trains and I hope to travel on the 11.29, arriving 11.52.
The cheapest ticket seems to the the Anytime Day Single which is a slightly crazy £19.70 for a 20 minute journey.
Is there any clever work-around to get a cheaper fare?

It's a bit bonkers: for £8.10 you can get advance tickets via Edinburgh 11:11 to Edinburgh 11:39, then 12:30 Edinburgh-Berwick arrive 13:11.

if you're really in no hurry ...... or you can do a bit of shopping in Edinburgh between trains

EDIT (I used trainsplit.com to find this fare)

Another option might be the bus - the number 253 leaves Dunbar town centre at 10.10 or 12.10 and arrives at Berwick at either 11.10 or 13.26. I don't know what the fare is on the bus but Borders Buses offer a single on their app for £4.75.

From experience, the fares onboard are far higher then the app fares.

Yes - the website does list the on-board fare (I was looking in the wrong table) and it's £6.40 single which is definitely higher than the app.

A single from Berwick to Dunbar (it doesn’t show the fare in reverse but it’s safe to assume it’s the same) is £6.40 when purchased onboard.

The mobile app also shows a £2.53 promotion single fare that can be used on the 253, although the wording appears to suggest it’s only valid between Dunbar and Edinburgh? Not sure on that one.

Either way its a lot cheaper than the train, which is a shame!
