Dumfries to Penzance

Dear All, I'm booking some tickets for two relatives with a Two Together Railcard to travel from Dumfries (or Carlisle) to Penzance. I've looked into it and the cheapest seems to be the Off Peak rtn at £301.10. Not sure if splitting would reduce this at all. Also I wonder if anyone could recommend a route where trains might be quieter. They are going Friday 24 July and returning Friday 31 July. Thanks for any help.

If you are prepared to 'endure' multiple changes and can accept having to take a fixed itinerary (i.e. not flexible) then going via the WCML, and then via Birmingham, often delivers the best price. Also, going from Carlisle is notably cheaper.

On such a long journey they will almost certainly encounter busy trains at some point. But generally the WCML route at least is relatively capacity-rich, especially if you catch an 11-coach Virgin Pendolinos. However, you may encounter much busier services if you have the misfortune of being on a 4-coach CrossCountry Voyager around peak commuting hours.

Assuming you mean Tuesday 24th and Tuesday 31st, TrainSplit can find a combination of tickets that cost just £183.10 return for both people, plus a fee of £9.75 for finding the saving. You can book the combination and pick up all the tickets all with one booking reference - there should be approximately 57 in total!

The 27th is a Friday, not the 24th? Using this as the departure date and 3rd August as the return date, Trainsplit.com can save about £50 as per Merseysider says on flexible tickets. Fixed advanced tickets can take this closer to £200 for the two of you. All from Carlisle
