If a train was approaching, would you suggest that the photographer should cross anyway? Surely if they waited for the train to pass, they would be 'Linesiding' by your definition?

The majority of foot crossings were created to allow public rights of way, which are always there, unless if a train is approaching, in which case it is a railway. Because of the position it is in, also, it is there for you to cross the railway, not to stop and take photos or have a picnic complete with a check mat and a parasol.

It's in a public place and it isnt lineside, why dont you think of a name, that way you'd like it far better.

C'mon - it's a name that's been made up, it's hardly inappropriate for the task, as we know Jim doesn't hold PTS and I doubt if he's likely to trespass, surely when he says "linesiding" we know what he means?

'Lineside' IMO is a term meaning photographing from a location other then a station.A bridge could be classed as 'lineside' etc.
I doubt that Jim or most others would put themselves or others at risk.

I accept that he was acting legally, I didnt have much doubt that he wasnt, however I do object to the word 'Linesiding' being used, if this forum wants to be responsible for some member going out and getting him or herself killed, then carry on letting them use the word, otherwise it really should be banned, as it could lead to people trespassing on railways and putting both themselves, and others at risk.

If the use of the word 'Linesiding' on this forum directly contributes to any of those events taking place, I can assure you it will be added to the swear filter. However, I think the likelihood of such an event occuring as a direct result of the use of a particular word is very slim.

At no point did I debate any of that. I simply queried one of Jamie's responses.

Stop being bloody awkward, for christ sakes.

Linesiding is a casual term meaning photgraphing from someware other than a stations, as ChrisM said. I think just about every enthusiast knows that, and even if they dont, do you think that they are gonna go and stand in the cess and start snapping.

Christ, again, youve just gone out of your way to cause trouble.....

Glad to see so many people actually realised that I was legal...

TBH, I agree with SPM here, Jamie has just gone out of his way to pick up on this, & make it as awkward as you can. By the looks of it, everyone else understands this 'photographers' term

I have decided to remove this post because I don't want to be involved in this argument.

I actually went out of my way to stop people trespassing. Though surely when you do 'Heads-Out', or 'External Observations', you are also going out of your way to act illegally and cause trouble?

Why is the title 'Duff that pig'

At a guess... because the Nickname given to a class 47 is "Duff" and that of a 442 is a "Pig/Plastic Pig," perhaps the OP can confirm?

Now who mentioned 'heads out'? Anywau, you say you did it to stop people trespassing - no-one had trespassed in the first place! You going on and on like a broken record won't stop tresspassers anyway...

The positioning is just right :).

I don't want to sound cruel, but I disagree. This one has very little train in it at all. Unfortunately the angles at Clapham aren't great either, but that's partly down to the restrictive view down the platform. That's why it's sometimes better to go photting at locations other than stations.

I agree that better can be done with a 6x optical zoom, but most of the other photos have very good positioning.

As for your debate, I never thought it was possible to make a debate out of the term 'lineside'. Surely this can be kept out of this thread, or split into another topic, as it has nothing to do with any of 1288gaje's pics. I thought that the moderators/admin would have noticed!

If youa ren't meant to be within 3 metres of the rail, how are you meant to get on a train? You are always less than 3 metres above the rail unless you climb on the roof...

Exactly my thought, if this was the case we would need to rebuild all of our trains so they had a rail clearance of 3m, or else we might break the law

6x optical zoom wouldn't have been needed. Had Julian waited for the train to get closer then it would have filled the shot perfectly. The positioning of the other shots isn't 'very good' IMO, as you can't see enough of the train, but as I said, that is mainly down to the nature of the location.
