Northern have recently doubled the amount of trains serving the station (new services on a Sunday), so there must be some demand. It is always a vicious cycle: Low useage=lowering of services, lowering of services= lower useage.
The main problem with stopping the regular SLB - DAR services at the station is that the timings to get across the ECML south of Darlo station are tight; it is not uncommon for the service from Middlesbrough to be a few minutes late and therefore it gets held at the junction for a good 5-10 minutes. This wouldn't impact too much on the return working since most services terminate at Darlo but does mean that you can easily miss your connection going north or south. Putting it as a request stop on some services might be a better idea, then again you'd get people wanting the trains to stop at places like Dinsdale more often, which has a much larger market than the airport.
