I assume there is no progression or next level from it directly within the company.

Trainman/woman/person was traditionally in the footplate "line of promotion" which meant the role was a natural entry to driving. Replaced the role of Secondman in the 80s.

Specifying the role as non-peogessive means they're specifically saying the role does not automatically progress to driver.

In the same way anyone in any job could apply to be a trainee driver. It'll give you some very good experience to take forward in a future application. But it's no longer in the line of promotion, so getting a driver job would be the same as anyone else applying.

Incidentally, it did mean that Trainpersons were represented by ASLEF, as it was deemed a footplate grade. Now its no longer such, that may no longer be the case
