And the HST MTUs are now into their third full overhaul cycle (i.e. beyond the second QL4). They were only expected to do two cycles.

That's interesting. Does that imply the MTU engines are coming towards the end of their life or just that they have been used longer that was originally anticipated when the repower was planned.

Would a third repower then be on the cards if the MTU engines are getting to the point they can no longer be rebuild another time?

thanks

The issue at present is probably more about what warranty MTU will give with overhauled engines. There will also be plenty of spares when power cars start going for scrap.

Stadler's bumf tells of a Caterpillar CAT175-12 engine, which has 2100kW/2800BHP. A useful output and over 2 tonnes lighter than the 175-16 as fitted to the 68.
Hi

Could you please share a link to that? That's interesting and something I haven't spotted on the Stadler website

thanks

The tender was for March, so not too long to wait and see what this turns out to be, but my money is still on 10 more class 68's unless there is a new spec and design, but I can't see it happening! Correct me if I'm wrong!
I'll probably post a similar theme for the proposed class 93 thread!

Looks like we've drifted off topic here! The tender was for March, so not too long to wait and see what this turns out to be, but my money is still on 10 more class 68's unless there is a new spec and design, but I can't see it happening! Correct me if I'm wrong!

can't be 68 as a new build can't use the same engine, for emissions regs- no space for the exhaust after-treatment.

Hello

My understanding of the DRS purchase of the Class 68s was that it was open for further locos so that might just be what this is i.e. more Class 68s

As to the transition into the next emission standard (latest is Stage IIIB, all Class 68s thus far have been Class IIIA), there is a Stage IIIB version of the Caterpillar C175-16 available (its gone into some other Stadler locos etc) and there is space in the Class 68 for Cat's Stage IIIB aftertreatment

Example of the Tier 4 (US emission standard) version of the C175-16 here

https://www.finning.com/en_GB/produ...eneration/diesel-generator-sets/18500478.html

Aftertreatment packaging for Stage IIIB would be similar to this Tier 4 setup

(Tier 4 gen-set emission standards are close to Stage IIIB locomotive standards - particulate matter limit is lower for IIIB than Tier 4 though)
