DRS Class 20 question

Yesterday I was on the Pathfinder Buffer Puffer 11.1 - top and tailed throughout by 20303 and 20304.

It seemed to me both 20s appeared somewhat higher than the carriages. Of course I know not all stock is all of the same height, but it was not that. And I had for haulage 177 different 20s in BR service long before privatisation and preservation, and never noticed this before.

NO this was different. Something I do not recall seeing before. The 20s appeared to sit on the rails noticeably higher than the adjacent carriages - a Mk.1 at one end a Mk.2 at the other end.

When 20s were refurbished were springing or suspension changes made so they sit higher, or some other modification made ?

I would doubt a modification to the carriages, else I'd have noticed it with out loco classes while working other trains.

The only other thing someone suggested on the day when I pointed it out is maybe it is an optical illusion as the locos were coupled nose end to carriages, and perhaps the larger than otherwise gap and the shape and curvature of the 20 nose made it look odd when it was not.

Sorry but that is plain wrong.

Extra fuel tanks for start, which made them heavier all up weight, changing RA 5 or standard 20 to RA 6, and, as someone commented on another forum, could have lead to altered springing. A standard BR 20 was 1727 litre, a 20/3 is 2900 or 4909 l, that is up to three tons heavier when full.

There are other mods e.g. 20/3 are ao - and there were no ao BR 20s only vo and xo.

And isn't the multiple unit system changed somehow on DRS locos ?

And so on.

Some of us can actually answer the question asked rather than try and show people how clever we are by answering something that hasnt been asked!

...although (as an impartial observer) I would suggest that including 'in external dimensions' in post #2 would have avoided every post since. A little clarity goes a long way!

Yeh and have you seen one answer I got on WNXX ? Completely absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with my question.

I'm afraid 15 years of using forums gives me a cynical approach and sceptical of answer in a significant number of cases

I havent been on WaNX for a few years now, ever since some poxy photographer with a superiority complex tried to tell me how to drive trains when its snowing (he forgot about/ didnt know about all the relevant rules and regs etc), prize prat he was/ is!
