Just amazed me that they handed back locos less than ten years old & reinstated ones which are fifty years old!

Or cheaper? Perhaps fully depreciated (and DRS-owned) 20s and 37s have a better effect on the balance sheet than the leasing costs of fairly new 66s. Anyone know if DRS lease or own the ex-Fastline 66/3s?

if i understand the situation correctly...
the class 20s and some class 37s were removed from service before DRS took on the "cruise saver" trains, before they gained the Northern belle contract, before they regained part of the stobart rail contract, and before they gained a contract for forthcoming/future intermodal trains for P&O Ferrymasters.

plus the extra work for class 47s at NXEA...

so thats a chunk of extra work that DRS have picked up since they started to store the class 20s and 37s...

add to that, that DRS have some sort of contract or agreement regarding DBS use of DRS class 37s for some services over and above "back up" locomotives for Network Rail infrastructure trains (ex Serco services)

and thats all before additional charter trains, RHTT services (if DRS are running any this year), and MSP fitted locomotive provision for snow clearing duties in the winter

...And for some reason, ive got a feeling that more of the Network Rail infrastructure trains may go over to more DRS Class 37 operation in the future – The 31s really are becoming pretty tired / knackered (delete as appropriate!) - Leading to the phasing out of the 31s by next year, so that leaves Network Rail with the hired in 57/3s – But with Southern thunderbird duties as well, will 6 57/3s be enough? And the Class 73 Re-engineering program underway at REVEL of Derby to increase the lifespan of the 73s…The Pedestrians won’t be around on the Southern for too much longer!

Im led to believe that there was another reason for the storage of the class 20s as well as the traffic flows, in that DRS Seems to have had several management changes as of late – But what I find rather strange is the selling of 2 of the 20/3s to Harry Needle – whilst at the same time, DRS Seem to be starting to re-activate their share of the 20/3s!

Going off topic for a moment, another bit of DRS News for you by the way:

47832 Has now been repainted into Northern Belle colours,

DRS Has now purchased 47805, 47839 and 47853 from Rivera Trains, with 47853 now in Eastleigh Works, and 47747 as the fleets Christmas Tree...

So the class 47 Spending Spree now continues with Direct Rail Services - Good! Just hope that they decide to keep 47853 In XP64 Livery!

and 47747... although acording to the usual rumours on WNXX and even over on www.class47.co.uk.. 747 is destined to be the fleets "christmas tree"

it was even mentioned by a DRS man on WNXX (Stombidae iirc) that the DRS 47s will be getting maintained at Eastleigh... and with the DRS 47s already recieving bodywork repains, repaints and overhauls at Eastleigh by Arlington Fleet Services... .. could mean that Lord Harry is going to be concentrating on class 37 work for DRS...

Funnily enough, just been reading the same thing at the same time

Though whilst Lord Harry seems to be concentrating on 37s...Does make you wonder why 47828 is being done up by him when 813s in Eastleigh undergoing overhaul by Arlington...

(And yes, forgot about the christmas tree 47747 - shame in a way that Colas dont require anymore 47s...Still if its keeping them alive, then ill be happy)

well he had 813 at BH for quite some time..
not to mention 47791.. which was repainted and then abandoned (partway through overhaul/re-activation) in the sidings at BH...where it still remains.

fair enough Harry is apparently to get the work to fit ETH to the DRS 57/0s... but aside from that ... all they seem to be doing is class 37 overhauls for DRS... HNRCs own class 20 repairs/overhauls/repaints and some of HNRCs own class 08 and 09 shunters...

not trying to bad mouth harry... but one reason that DRS may be buying class 47s from the likes of Riviera could be that Harry only seems to be interested in selling his locos, IF the buyer commits to getting Harrys lot to do a proper overhaul...

why go through all that when DRS seeming would prefer Harry to concentrate on its new class 37/4s... and any class 47s DRS buys elsewhere can go wherever is most economical for the heavy work ie. Arlington Fleet Services
