Hi all,
do you know if it's compulsory to hold a UK driving license to become a train driver?

Not 100% sure but I don't *think* so although I guess some companies may require it. FOC's for example may require you to drive a works van from point A to B to meet a train I guess.

My friends son has a commercial pilots licence but is only just learning to drive! The fact that he can fly a commercial jet engine aircraft but can't drive a car always amuses me.

No it isn't, but, and it's quite a big one, you would need to clearly demonstrate your ability to get to and from the depot without reliance on public transport.

May not be a 'legal' requirement but some TOCs insist on it. FCC state that trainees must have a uk driving license. Not sure their exact reasoning but you won't get through to the application form if you don't have one.

Simple answer is no however it is a great advantage if you do have one and may make the difference of you getting a job or not.

Scotrail will not take you on unless you can get to and from your work without public transport. So essentially yes.

That depends on how close to the depot you are, they are quite a few at the depot I work who walk or cycle to work. The distance from your depot is a governing factor here. If you are 45 minutes or closer walking or cycling then you will not need a driving licence.

Yes that is true but obviously varies depot to depot. My depot is City Centre so no one lives close enough without a car. Maybe not absolutely necessary at all locations but a driving licence will give you the edge over someone who doesn't have one, even just to take a van or company car somewhere,something we do occasionally.

Required at GB as far as I know! A lot of work involves company vans and hire cars.

Surely DB Schenker has got to appeal more due to the fact that other staff drive you around, unlike other FOC's where you got to drive yourself there which increases the stress and fatigue?
