Drivers Windscreen smashed Eastbrook 10/04/19

TFW 2Y13 0652 Aberdare to Barry Island terminated at Eastbrook this morning following the ejection of a passenger from the train for unknown reason and who then proceeded to smash the driver's windscreen of the 142 with some ballast from the track. Delays were incurred, the units subsequently moved to Canton and the "vandal" taken into police custody.

Ejected passenger 'smashes train cab window' causing long delays

There were major delays on Transport for Wales services this morning after a passenger who was ejected from a train allegedly smashed the front window of the train cab.

Transport for Wales said that because the train had been vandalised it had been unable to move from the station at Eastbrook, near Dinas Powys in the Vale of Glamorgan.

British Transport Police said a man was reported to have thrown a piece of ballast at the train.

A spokesman added that a 22-year-old man from Barry had been arrested and is in police custody....

It is plausible, depends on how heavy the lumps are and how hard they are thrown. Are train windscreens like car windscreens made out of toughened glass which shatters in a web-like pattern but holds together?

Yes. 'Smashed' in the context here probably does not mean millions of little pieces all over the floor but unable to see through clearly because of the damage pattern.

Hope the driver wasn't too shaken up. Not much fun having a lump of rock thrown directly at your windscreen especially if there was no time to duck out of the way.

You mean laminated, then yes.

It’s hard to tell from any of the pictures Ive seen, is it the drivers window or the 2nd mans side that was smashed??

Pics on BBC show 2nd man side shattered, middle pane broken and drivers side fine. BUT I would suggest the driver would have been too shaken to drive.

From the photo above, neither. It was 142 085 involved and ran on its own, they've probably used a stock photo

I find this story particularly disappointing, as I used to disembark at that platform at Eastbrook on a regular basis. I'd make a point of riding at the front of the unit, so I could thank the driver through their (hopefully open) window as I walked toward the exit, before the guard dispatched the train.

Practically the opposite of what this individual did.

This as well as 165102 with a smashed windscreen - does anyone know if that was also deliberate? 142085 has a crazed window, rather than actually smashed, and it's the secondman's side.

I've been on a train when a stone hit the window right next to my face. The window stayed well in tact, but it was a nasty experience.
Slightly surprised that the window actually broke (given my experience).
