They are not cheap but the quality is fantastic, my key poach on my belt is 7 years old and the catch is as tight as the day I got it.

I might look at getting myself a bag as well, the work ones are fullipin rubbish.

Out of curiosity, was there a difference in specification for drivers' / guard's bags?

I acquired one a while ago via a certain auction site (the fact it was very poorly described and that I found it by chance led to a reasonable price!) and it's quite useful as a kit bag for one of my part time jobs...

The one I have has

bardic lamp holder

what appears to be tea-can sized compartment

what appears to be old style working timetable sized compartment

strap / buckle inside (would this be for holding a pair of flags?)

Not certain about the exact specification for the bags, however the Guards bag had a long shoulder strap whilst Driver's bags have handles. Sounds like yours is a Guards bag - judging by the flag straps in the top flap.

If it is brown in colour with a long strap chances are it is a guards bag. If it is black with two carry handles it is a drivers bag.

The bag I have is brown and has a shoulder strap so think it's fairly clearly a guard's bag.

(to be honest, I've not seen the variety you describe as a drivers bag, so didn't think to add these details!)

"footplate equipment" do new ones, and they refer to a compartment for detonators - maybe that's what i assumed was for a tea can!

What you have is indeed a guards bag. I have a black leather drivers bag(from my BR days) and its still in good nick even now
