If a line is closed completely and there is no diversionary route what do the drivers and guards who are not needed do?

In the winter storm shut downs anyone rostered to start before 0800 (or whenever the trains started running reverted to spare, this became complicated as the crew rest areas soon became quite crowded and chaotic with the result that many crew were sent home after 3-4 hours just to create space as there was no sign of them getting any trains to work.

They then cut out other crews from their 'last bit' where possible. Share the cake around so to speak. If not it's just a case of sitting around bored, watching TV, shopping or just drinking lots of coffee & becoming messroom lawyers.

Often there are special diagrams implemented, which cover for the booked diagrams, due to revised services. For example, last weekend, FCC services between Bedford and Brighton were diverted via away from London Bridge, with an extra 15' in the schedule, so Bedford drivers were being relieved at Three Bridges, to allow them to have their PN breaks, with Brighton drivers working to / from Brighton. Extra / revised diagrams being created.

Also, if the line is completely blocked at either Brighton or Bedford, then there is extra time / duties required to allow them to go by taxi to where the trains are starting.

They get rostered to work the routes that they open. If the depot only has one route (e.g. Pwhelli) and it is closed then the Drivers simply go home on full pay, they are not required.
