Driverless Trains and Obstructions on the Line

My main thought came about with the DLR, but I was wondering what happens on such systems where there is an obstruction on the line. Be it something like a shopping trolley or something else?

Naturally, with a driver they would bring the train to a stand, and maybe on the DLR, a train captain may, but do the units have any sensors built in to do this automatically or would it plough on regardless?

I think the DLR has some sort of radar on the front but I dont know what sort of range it has but it wont be far.

Various obstacle detection systems are also being trialled at Leytonstone station on the Central line; whilst this is not a driverless railway I assume it will be used to aid the development of driverless systems in the future. This includes sensors/cameras mounted along the underside of the platform canopy, as well as other pieces of equipment on the side of the platform. Obviously only of use in the platform areas, but who knows if something similar could be installed in the cable run, for instance?
