Driver Training Simulators

Following on from a recent discussion on another topic, how many people here who aren't drivers etc would love a go at a driver simulator, for example, i know people who aren't even into trains but would love to have a go at the proper simulator...

I seem to recall the 323 simulator was at Railtex a few years ago; I had a go on it then...

I would! The closest I've been is sitting in the drivers seat of the 185 one at Ardwick Depot (after watching a couple of kids let loose driving it and accelerating so fast everyone would have been in the back cab IRL :P)

Yep, short of driving the real thing, and having a cab ride in the real thing, it's probably third on my rail related wish list!

I've always thought TOCs miss out on a potential revenue stream here. I'm sure there is money to be made in selling sessions on a simulator.

Like those day out packs you see in WH smiths, make one of those for a driver simulator.

I've had a go on the Virgin simulators a few years ago which was good fun

There are a few places with fixed base flight simulators now. I know there is one at Sywel with a couple of 737NG cockpits (Running Lockheed Prepare3D - a certified commercial derivative of MS Flight Sim) . But I'm not sure if there is a rail equivalent of the Kai Tak, Paro, Funchal or Innsbruck approaches that would act as a challenge to the more casual enthusiast. But if anyone wanted to build a rail sim then good luck to them!

It doesn't interest me; call me boring but I'd rather be working at a desk that stays still!

Not me. I hate going on the simulator. I find it unrealistic and because it uses a made-up route there is a lot of potential for making embarrassing cock-ups from lack of route knowledge. I had a spectacular SPAD the first time I used it, in circumstances that never would have occured in the real world. Obviously there is no blame attached for these things but one still feels like a prat.

Given the cost of the simulators, how often they are in use and the fact you are going to need at least one member of staff there, it would take an awful long time to recoup even a fraction of all the costs I rekon.
