Any reason why on a HST Power Car the driver to guard buzzer is sounded as a beep rather on Units it is a buz?

I actually never thought of that, as they say the world would be boring without differences!

Guard - Driver communication on Southern is largely bleep - bleep now isn't it?

Our 156/158 and most 170's are beep. The only buzzer are the newer generation 170's.

Pretty sure GWR 158s and ATW 158s are buzzer?

Are 180s and 175s both beep?

Hopefully not too OT. Today on XC Exeter to Bristol (and back), at each stop, I heard three buzzes, pauze, followed by three buzzes. Then a pause. Then the usual two buzzes followed by two buzzes - and away we went,as normal.
What were the first pair of three buzzes all about? Never heard before.

Were you on a Voyager? The three buzzes would of actually been 1 and then 2, this is the code to instruct the driver to close the doors. The first would of been the guard to the driver, second the driver responding. This is then followed by the usual ready to start.

What guards? ;)

On a more serious note: how did buzzer communication come to be in the first place? Was it invented before the telephone or radio transceivers?

This is common practise for XC, and GWR too if I remember rightly?

The guard closes the doors, the 1-2 buzz is just a guard-driver confirmation.

EMUs use beeps too:

Class 350
Class 360
Class 390
Class 444
Class 450

All do anyway. Not sure about Class 380.

The 380 uses beeps aswell when operated on Driver - Guard services ie; Glasgow Central - Edinburgh Waverley/North Berwick where the driver opens the doors and the guard closes them.

Not on 22x they don't. The driver operates the doors under the guard's instruction using the buzzer. Guard's panels on 22x (well, Voyagers anyhow, 222s may differ) have only a key switch (which also enables local door) and signal buzzer.

The sequence is:
Guard->Driver 1-2 on buzzer
Driver starts door closure and returns 1-2. Local door remains open.
Once doors verified closed guard closes local door and gives 2
Driver returns 2 and departs.

I have no idea how this odd setup came to be - perhaps the long term plan was DOO?

But I thought I saw the guard's local door stay open, or does the driver control that too?

I hate modern units with the beepers. They are not very distinguishable from other in cab beeps.

All of the Scotrail 156's and 158's that I have been on have beepers in the cab but the GOPs in the middle of a Scotrail 158 have buzzers.

I remember once a Northern 319 that I worked had a bell in one cab and a buzzer in the other!
