I'm sure Northern have this for all their depots, and probably every other TOC. Usually it is said to be 'for safety reasons' but of course will be to ensure staff can get in. Wouldn't be very good being over an hour away and getting stuck in traffic every monring.

You quoted my post and gave some reasons why the 30 minute rule is justified. I don't disagree at all with the rule applying to existing staff for the very same reasons you outline, but to apply the rule to those who are applying for the job (with the intent of relocating) is narrow-minded.

I suppose it's an ongoing argument, but of course NR have every right to impose this rule and who are we to tell them they're wrong for doing so.

The rule od fine, if more organisations had such rules it would lead to a lot less commuting by car and a reduction in carbon emissions!

I don't think it's good or fair to not even consider someone because of the rule. I'm sur emany people would consider relocating for such a job.

Think I got the wrong end of the stick. I agree that it may be a bit short sighted to say that at the application stage, but I fuly understand the reasoning behind it when it comes to a driver being able to get to the depot on time.

Perhaps they don't/can't wait for someone to relocate (even if they can, it would take a long time to sell one house, move and buy another). Still, you'd think that with the length of training involved this may be factored in as time available to relocate.

Northern Rail's official line on this is that they don't have a guarantee that an applicant is able to make the move if offered the job.

Anyway, it's only Northern Rail so who cares.

You'll find that the majority of London based drivers live considerably more than 30 mins from their depots. It's just Northern's policy.

You can add Southern to the list. Won't even consider an application unless you are 30 min from depot at time of application.

What's interesting, is that some of the companies where you have the best chance of getting a training place, seem to have this restriction.

Personally, I live approx an hour from work (very early morning/ late night & Sundays, often a lot more). The early trains in represent an excellent networking opportunity, with other railway staff from Virgin, EMT, EC, FCC London based, Chiltern, SWT, LUL, Eurostar & Network Rail. It would seem that the criteria can sometimes be that you've a reliable means of getting to work.
