Fair enough, but personally I wouldn't call them a Driver Manager if all they're doing is basic admin stuff, regardless of their job title.
The only thing they’re not doing is the competency stuff. They’ll be managing attendance/performance as well as managing the teams as any other manager in any other grade would do.

I wouldn't include it as competency but my TOC still have the more traditional 'Driver Manager'

Competency, for me, is about routes, traction, and rules, and driving assessments.

Who does the investigations??
In an ideal world, a trained investigator.

But more pragmatically, which investigations? (Rhetorical question) At our place we have safety investigations, performance investigations and disciplinary investigations.

There's no absolute requirement for any of the above in any rail industry standard to hold driver competency although there will be times when it is desirable, perhaps indeed encouraged. Each operator should have processes which define what competencies are required for which investigations. There may be occasions for instance when Network Rail conduct a safety investigation and as a result their lead investigator will not hold driver competency for (hopefully) obvious reasons.

I assume investigations after a Safety of the Line incident was what was referred to, such as a SPaD, derailment, collision, station stopping incident and so on. Driver Managers should have some kind of training in investigating prior to carrying out such work.

Competency is probably the smallest part of the DM job.

Probably why "competency managers" are named as such.

Again, not all TOCs have 'competency managers' - maybe where you work they do but that is by no means universal. At my TOC a Driver Manager does everything and managing drivers' competency certainly forms the lion's share of that work.

My TOC doesn't have competency Managers. I agree all TOCs work different. Drivers competency (for our DMs) isn't seen as the biggest part of the job. I think our longest driving assessment is 120 minutes. Granted there are around 20-25 per team and multiple assessments per year but investigations can take a few weeks. Care and support, interviews, sickness, return to works, trainee paperwork, meetings, projects, etc etc. Form more parts to the whole.

I think we can all agree, there are many parts to the role and Manager is just a name, by any other rose, that tastes like a doughnut.

Some companies have pool vehicles for managers on call, others use taxis. There is a vast array of job titles as we can see from this thread. Some are competency managers that are required to do a certain amount of driving to retain their licence, think it depends from TOC to TOC but not sure, while others are not competent or technically qualified. Does make one question whether they are actually managers or whether the job title could be co-ordinators or administrators instead.

Surely its no different to a Station Manager managing dispatchers?
A Station Manager will do everything except manage the competence of platform staff - they have Operations Inspectors (or whatever they're called these days)

A Driver Manager, by their very job title should be managing all aspects of their drivers, including competency. That's what they do at my TOC, anything less than that should be reflected in the job description and associated title.
